I've been hearing about her, so I finally downloaded some of her songs.
Complicated, Skater Boy, Anything But Ordinary, Tomorrow, My World, and Things I'll Never Say
My opinion is she's pretty good. I like her voice, and you hear real instruments!! How refreshing from that computer generated effects in all of Britney's music.
I like the song Anything but Ordinary especially, I liked the lyrics. From what I've learned Avril wrote them as well, great!
I don't know if she's the most talented here, but she's showing some promise to me with what I've seen and heard so far.
I know the whole Britney thing is almost dead now, and a lot of teenies are pulling their hair out upset. Well the few of em that are left at least. I just hope this trend continues and from what I see with Michelle Branch doing well too it looks that way.
Happy Happy Joy Joy!

I agree. Avril's music sounds similar to Britney's, but the difference is that the instrumentals are real and not computer generated. Some of Britney's stuff is fun to listen to, but generating a song on a computer or synthesizer doesn't take near the amount of talent it takes to play an instrument.

If you had only seen what I saw on MTV two nights ago..she was live in concert and her voice sounds NOTHING like it does in "Complicated". All of the non-monotonous notes were completely out of tune, and she was screaming the lyrics. It was not a fun sight. I think she might have had a cold, but that can't possibly kill the WHOLE song. She's not so different from the computer-generated Britney if she sounds opposite live than video.

I downloaded a song by her when I saw this, because my friends keep asking if I've heard her, and it gave me an excuse. Anyway, I got 'Complicated,' and it's alright, not horrible. But it's not really something I like. I don't keep up with pop. The last time I saw anything on MTV, it was last year at school when someone turned the TV to that station for a few seconds. The last time I heard a Top 40 station was when I went to San Francisco and I was tuning through all the different stations. We don't have a Top 40 station where we live. I listen to alternative radio. They have Dave Matthews Band (one of my favorites!) and funk versions of 'The Ballad of Davy Crockett,' and I like it that way. So, my opion on her -- she's alright, not really wonderful, she sounds okay. I don't have any sort of problem with her, and I think if you can relate to her songs and like them, that's great.

"She's not so different from the computer-generated Britney if she sounds opposite live than video."
If what you're saying is true, then it'd make me think twice about her singing abilities, BUT the girl CAN write lyrics pretty well to me, and she still plays the guitar. That is a VAST difference from that of Britney who can't do either, plus Avril hasn't thrusted her breasts everywheres either.

^^I agree, Britney hasn't a note of talent in her. Avril doesn't really write her lyrics by herself, which is still not as bad as Britney.
But you can't really base her talent on how she compares to Britney Spears. I mean, yes, she does more than Britney but..
She writes 1/2 her songs She doesn't play guitar in live concerts so it seems like more of a prop for her video. Her voice is not very good.
When you see that as a musician, she's not too spectacular. I'm not saying she's bad, because she does have some talent, but I think she should work a little more and she could be an amazing musician. It doesn't matter if she's popular now, because that doesn't decide her status as a musician in general.
Okay, I'm done now, heh, I'm tired because IT'S LATE AND SCHOOL STARTS IN 3 DAYS!

I like Avril, but I can understand a lot of what you guys are saying. I saw her in concert on MTV too, and I was kinda suprised at her. She didn't sound awful, but she didn't sound like she did on her CD. I don't expect her to sound just as great, but I was a little disappointed.
It kinda suprised me when she wasn't playing her guitar in concert. In her video, she makes it look like she's playes her own instrument, almost to kinda put her in the same category as Michelle Branch and Vanessa Carlton. I'm not trying to compare her to them, she's her own person, but you know what I mean.
Also, just because she doesn't write her songs alone doesn't mean she doesn't have a lot of creativity. We don't know what goes on in the studio, so technically we can't critique that part of her. She could be manufactured to be this different girl who doesn't dress revealing so people will think she's a breath of fresh air and that she's unique, but I think it's more of her being particularly discovered because of these reasons. In an interview, she said when she first signed to Arista, they were going to write all her songs for her and didn't give her any artistic credit. I'm guessing they were gonna turn her into a "pop princess" type singer, but who knows....
I have her CD, and it's really good. True, "Complicated" may seem a little more "poppy" (I know pop music is popular music and isn't a type, but I can't think of any other word to describe it), but seriously, her other songs aren't. I'm thinking her record company wanted this to be her first single or wanted her to write a song like it so her first single would be more mainstream (just like they did with Eminem with "The Real Slim Shady" and "Without Me").
I think that's all I have to say, so all I can say is be nice to each other!

I am talking to that girl at the site. No, I am not bashing her. I am NOT going to be like that.. however her site is talking about Avril the "hypocrite" because she doesn't like the way Skater Boy is written and saying it's juvenile. The girls SN is in letters LiKe THiS.. need I say more?
And I don't know what you guys are talking about regarding her voice. I've seen her sing live 3 times now and she sounds really good each time. On Jay Leno, Good Morning America, and the VMAs. Am I missing something?
As for someone said she wrote just half her songs.. well this is her first CD.. and MOST people don't write ANY songs on the first CD.. ie BRITNEY.

I was talking to this girl who is actually pretty nice.. we were discussing this:
She doesn't like Avril because she claims to be punk, and not pop when to her she's 100% pop.
My opinion is that she's a mixture of both pop and punk, but doesn't claim herself to be pop because that would mix her in with the likes of Britney, Christina, Mandy, ect ect and she doesn't want that.
This girl thinks Avril is only doing it because that's what's "in" right now and to sell more.
I think she makes some good points, but I don't see how Avril can claim to be just pop when she's not like Britney.. however some people definition of pop can mean anything in the top 40.. and in that case Eminem who claims to be a rapper would be a pop person too.
I think Avril is more like Atlantis Morriset and I don't think she claimed to be pop either. I may be wrong.

Reb-- I just read all of that on that site. There are some things I have to disagree with though. Yeah, if you do take her clothes that she always wears and puts 'Britney clothes' on her, then listen to her music, I'm sure everyone would look at her in a different way. I dress a lot like her. It's only because of my style and because I don't like wearing skanky shit ( and, yes, I have been dressing like this way before she ever came out) So just because she wears that doesn't mean she is wearing it to make her music sell. And I've never seen any of what she has said in magazines (Mainly because I'm getting sick and tired of flipping through a teeny magazine and on every page the models are either half naked or trying to call themselves Punk or Gothic and showing all the hot topic places where you can buy the clothes to look just like them so you can call yourself cool) So there's something I'll have to check out. Also, they say that on her site, or whatever, they play the song 'St8er Boi', then saying they're playing it to impress people, so they'll think all the songs on there are like that so they will buy it. I love the song 'St8er Boi'. It's catchy, and has a good beat. I like the words. And believe it or not, the song makes me sad at times. One thing I agree with though, is that she is NOT rock, dammit!! That is not rock. Like I said above (That is not rock..jk) Take away the clothes she wears and put britney clothes on her then listen to her music. It will sound more poppy to more people now because she isn't wearing a Freak/ Punk style. It also says that Avril said 'I wrote all those songs when I was sixteen' yet whoever wrote it said 'the credits say otherwise'. But that's also what I heard about Pink. I heard (or shall I say, read) in a magazine that she wrote whatever song that was. When I find the lyrics in a J14 magazine, it says it was written by someone else (and yeah, it was the same song) It made me kind of mad for Pink.. (..PINK!) would lie about something like that, so that's why it doesn't matter much to me if Avril wrote it or not.. Well, I g2g real quick so I can't finish. But I'll post more later, k.

Well, it depends what your definition of "rock" is. Not all rock is hardcore, depressing music. It can be upbeat and catchy. I'd classify her music as pop rock, and some of it would be considered soft rock (i.e. Complicated). But no, she is definitely not punk.

As far as genre goes, I think Avril can fit into all of those mentioned above, depending on what aspect of her, her looks, or her music you look at. Which is what I like about her - she's not openly trying to conform to one group or stereotype. That's her own originality.
About dressing the way she does just to sell, you could say that about just anything she wears, so I don't think it's a valid criticism.
I think if I had to pick a genre for her, it would be Indie.
