The one example I can give on what Punk actually is would be Rob Zombie.
Woah.. what? As a "punk expert", I would hope you of all people would know what "punk" really is.. and dear, Rob Zombie is FAR from it.
Anyways, I am usually into more punk rock kinda music, but Avril is a talented girl and I can relate to alot of her songs. She's very pretty and I think that she may fit the "Britney/Mandy/etc." clique, she's different than they are.

i'm not really into Avril. I don't really like michelle branch, vanessa c, shakira etc. I think they are all talented and have pretty good voices but i'm not into their songs. I've seen much better lyrics from Ani DiFranco and other female singers.I am happy to see female artists that write their own music, I just don't think thier stuff is anything special.

She's just way to different from them - ways including: Style, attitude, voice, lyrics, music...etc. She's just not one of them. The rest are all happy, boppy, pop type people. She's just....not.

She's very good... Although I'm mostly into indie rock, I enjoy listening to her songs once in a while.
I know a bit about punk music myself, and, as much as I hate putting labels on music, she's pop. A good way to put it, as someone said before, "pop with a twist." She might have some punk influences (pop-punk, most definately), but she just has a little edge to her, maybe along the lines of Pink.
She might not sound exactly like a lot of the pop stars out there now, but I think she would fit into the same category. A lot of the female pop stars have been taking on an edgier style lately.
(9/3/02-- I took back the "She's very good." comment. Her music isn't bad, but she annoys the crap out of me, so yeah.)

I listen to mostly rap lately but I love Avril! I'm not too big on Michelle Branch and Shakira and all them. I mean, they're cool, just not my type. But I got Avril's CD the other day its not too bad. The songs are kinda all the same. Like, shes one of those people who, when they're songs come on, you know its them. Kind of repetitive, you know? But she's still of the hook and I like the cd, particularly #2,3, and 11. Later!!!!!!!! ;D

^^^ Hehe, as I always say, the only thing that rap is missing is "c" at the beginning of the word.

I LOVE Avril Lavigne. I read an article about her, and thought she sounded pretty cool, so I checked out some of her lyrics, then went out and bought the CD without *ever* hearing any of her songs. I absolutely love it. It's in my CD player right now ;D Her CD is like the story of my life, and that's what I love about it - I can relate to it. I wouldn't neccessarily (sp?) call her pop, pop with a twist fits better. And I *definitely* don't think she fits into the Britney/Mandy/Christina clique. Not @ all. First of all, she writes all her own stuff and she plays guitar. She also has a distinctive voice - to me, it doesn't sound pop-ish, but that could just be me. And her songs are stuff that you can relate to, as I said before. Plus, you can't really say she's complete pop until you listen to the whole CD - as someone said earlier, songs like "Unwanted" and "Losing My Grip" aren't happy little bubblegum pop songs.

I really don't see how Britany doesn't seem more manufactered than Avril (I hope you get what I'm saying)..Then again I have never really liked Britany and don't care for her much.
But I give a lot more respect to people who write their own songs than those who just go out there just to lip-sinc and dance. Big whoop to that.I can do that. Writing songs and singing them is what I call talent. Because I have tried writing songs but they never turned out right. But if I want to dance,I'll start dancing am everyone can follow each little twirl I do. So dancing isn't very much talent and if it is I'm just missing something.
About the Rob Zombie "Punk" thing. I do happen to know what Punk is. Excuse my friends on that.

Yes, I think you are missing something. Dancing is a beautiful art form, and it's not something you pick up in a few days. It takes years and years of training to perfect. Go see a professional ballet and tell me that's not talent. Of course, this goes for any style of dance, even the modern moves that performers use today.
The same goes with singing, which also takes a lot of training. It's extremely rare for an artist with a good voice to not have had any training... Some people need more than others, but it still takes a lot of work, practice and dedication.
You can't wake up one morning and start singing and dancing professionally.
People have different ways of entertaining the public, as everyone wants to see and hear different things. Some people are good writers, some people play the guitar, some people can sing, some people dance, some people juggle flaming sticks and swallow swords. Yet, they're all entertainers and it's completely subjective to say which is "best" since they are all dedicated to what they love, and are good at what they do.

hmm yep I was missing a point. Thakn you Lisa Also, would this be called talent?? I can sing like Briteny Spears..I mean I'm not trying at all. That's my real voice. I could do Hit me Baby one More Time in a snap and when I practice singing Iuse that voice to try to fix my screaming voices. It kind of hurts though, but I have always sang like that. Avril is Awsome,I hope I get her CD for my birthday!! (trying to get back on topic) ;D

>>Even if she does write her own music, she's very manufactured and fake. I just don't like her. That's just my opinion, though, and I hear Avril fans will bash people like me over the head.<<
I kind of disagree with you about that. Avril is manufactured, but no more than Britney Spears. Also, there are actual instrumentals in her music, as opposed to Britney’s music, which is mainly generated by computers. Some of that manufactured stuff is catchy, but it really gets to you after a while. Avril also has a really pretty voice. You can’t really say that about Britney, lol.
>>But I give a lot more respect to people who write their own songs than those who just go out there just to lip-sinc and dance.<<
What about singers or musicians who don’t write their own music? Do you think they are talented? I’m referring to someone like Celine Dion or Charlotte Church. I mean, even if you don’t like that kind of music, you have to admit that they are very talented singers. And the fact that they do not compose their music does not make them any less talented.
>>Writing songs and singing them is what I call talent.<<
What if someone writes a really crappy song? Would you consider that talented?
>>But if I want to dance,I'll start dancing am everyone can follow each little twirl I do. So dancing isn't very much talent and if it is I'm just missing something.<<
I agree with you to some degree. Britney Spears’ and N Sync’s dance moves obviously do not require a lot of talent. After all, they have a video that shows you how to dance to their songs. And if you’ve ever seen Making of the Video, those people learn how to do those dance moves within a couple of days. However, some dancing does require talent. Like ballet, for example (as Lisa said). It takes years for someone to become a professional ballerina.
>>Yet, they're all entertainers and it's completely subjective to say which is "best" since they are all dedicated to what they love, and are good at what they do.<<
Exactly my point. Someone may be a really talented guitarist, while another person may have an extraordinary voice. But you can’t really compare the talents of the two, because singing and playing an instrument are different skills.
>>I can sing like Briteny Spears..I mean I'm not trying at all. That's my real voice. I could do Hit me Baby one More Time in a snap and when I practice singing I use that voice to try to fix my screaming voices. It kind of hurts though, but I have always sang like that.<<
I know loads of people who can sing way better than Britney Spears. I definitely don’t think she has a great voice or anything. She got where she is today because of her image and because her songs are very catchy and fun to listen to.

<<<< What about singers or musicians who don’t write their own music? Would you consider that talented? >>>> Yes. Because if they did the right thing as in writing a beat, melody for it it could turn out nice. <<<< However, some dancing does require talent. Like ballet, for example (as Lisa said). It takes years for someone to become a professional ballerina. >>>> Yeah. Now that *is* the kind of dancing that *does* take time. (I wasn't thinking fully ) <<<< know loads of people who can sing way better than Britney Spears. I definitely don’t think she has a great voice or anything. She got where she is today because of her image and because her songs are very catchy and fun to listen to. >>>> I don't know anyone that could sing better than her, lol. (As in my friends) But I don't think she has a great voice either (which is why I don't like my own voice) ..Now if I wore skimpy stuff and was very thin I could probably be a Briteny twin, don't ya think??

I think Avril's clothes could be found at Delia*s now, so she's pretty popular because she's at the top of the trends. And you say Mandy and Christina don't have sad or "from the heart" songs on their albums? I'm pretty sure they do, I don't personally own any of them, but she has a bubblegum type music. I don't mean to be rude to her, her song's catchy and she has gorgeous hair, but don't label her things that she isn't if you don't know better Anyway, I saw some interviews with her and she's a little bit bitchy, eh. Let's just mask it as attitude.
