>>One thing I agree with though, is that she is NOT rock, dammit!! That is not rock.<< Well, it depends what your definition of "rock" is. Not all rock is hardcore, depressing music. It can be upbeat and catchy. I'd classify her music as pop rock, and some of it would be considered soft rock (i.e. Complicated). But no, she is definitely not punk. I never said rock was only hardcore and depressing, did I?? Didn't think so. Yeah, maybe she's pop rock. But what came to me first when she said she was 'Rock' was all the rock things I classify, such as:: Alternative, rap-rock, heavy/death metal, Gothic rock... so yeah.

Everytime I see this thread I want to read it as APril Lavigne. It's AVril Lavigne. Sorry, nothing of significance to contribute here.

About her being bitchy for interviews. Yeah... I saw the video of my friends aunt's interview with her and um, she was definately bitchy. That is, until she walked out in the middle of a question.

Okay, my slight dislike for Avril Lavigne has turned into a complete loathing. I have to turn of the TV or change the radio station whenever I see or hear her.
Where to begin? Okay, her bitchyness has to be the number 1 reason I can't stand her. She has this crude, "the world can kiss my ass" attitude which I hate. Some say they respect her for not sugarcoating everything, but there's a fine line between not sugarcoating something and being downright rude. I personally think she needs to start being grateful for her fame, because if she keeps acting like this, it won't last long.
Also, she considers herself punk, not that I really care what she thinks of herself. She can sing polka and call herself polish for all I care, but she wears a tie and wifebeaters, says "damn" and suddenly she's hardcore? Come on, in about 2 weeks you're going to see Limited Too selling ties. She sounds incredibly similar to Britney and the like. Not that I have anything against the genre, but its pop, it's not rebellious and dark.
<<I think if I had to pick a genre for her, it would be Indie.>>
The term "indie" typically fits unknown, underground bands with a sound that isn't mainstream. In my opinion, you don't hear anything from Avril that you wouldn't hear from Pink, or even some of Britney's newer music.

See?? I'm already becoming Anit- Avril..
I will, however, admit that I like her music. I want her CD, but not so badly that the world might end if I don't. I like her song Sk8er Boi and I do, in fact, like the video for Complicated.
But I will take you guys words for it. I have never seen her in an interview, so I don't know if she is that bitch or not.
The only thing that gets to me, is that she calls herself Punk, and that all the kids at my school, think SHE IS PUNK.
If I haven't said yet, one my of preppy friends asked me the other day if she could barrow my clothes/ pants because she wanted to BE Avril Lavigne. (Actually I think I have said this, but I think it was in another thread) AnYwAy, I called her a poser, (um yeah cause um... yeah) and I mean, if she wants to ber HER so badly, she can go buy her own clothes, instead copying my style so she can be Avril...
Ok.. I'm DoNe. ;D

I like Avril's music. I have the CD and its really good. Avril, as a person, just seems to be a bitch, though. She's not at all personal in interviews, she basically says "yes" or "no" and thats it. I just read today something about her where she said she never said her music was punk but that she was punk because she always looks for trouble and hung out with "her boys" when she was younger and because of her clothes. Whatever. I like her music, but as a person...she isn't the greatest

AVRIL LAVIGNE (from YM) 'I used to get in fights with guys and kick the crap out of them. My parents were worried about me because I was so small and skinny...' oo She is tough. Girl Fight??An anonymous letter to YM:: "The poor girl is trying so hard to not be like other pop princesses, but in reality she's exactly like them. Her music is pop, not punk as she "claims" to be. I say just ignore her as much as possible and maybe, just maybe, she'll disappear until VH1 makes a new One Hit Wonders show" Avril's blue haired guitarist jumped to her defense, by saying:: "She gets tagged the Pop Princess, but hasn't taken any dance lesssons, doesn't have one of those strap-on microphones, and doesn't lip-sync." hmm incase he hasn't noticed, not all pop singers lip-sync and not all have strapped on microphones. AVRIL SAYS!:: "It bugs the hell out of me when people say I'm not Punk. I never claimed to be" YM SAYS!:: Hmm. I remember Avril labeled herself as Punk in our July 02' issue. When I call her on that, she says she used the word to mean a screwup--Not Punk rocker. Riight. AVRIL THINKS!:: she thinks people have been quick to call me a punk rocker because I wear spike bracelets and plaid. "How lame is that?? being Punk has nothing to do with the way you dress-- It's what you believe in, how you act, and it's most political. I'm a chick with edge. I like to rock out, have fun, and cause trouble. What you see is totally what I am. I haven't let anyone mold me. ok, that pissed me off. Anyway, this is what I love about her though:: AVRIL TALKS..AGAIN!:: "I won't wear skanky clothes that sow my booty, my belly, or my boobs. If I were selling my body, I would wear that stuff, but I'm selling my music." (Ha! Take that Britney, Christina, J.LO, P!nk....etc.) oh wait.... if she is ONLY selling her music, what does she call making poppy music while wearing Punky clothes??

oh wait.... if she is ONLY selling her music, what does she call making poppy music while wearing Punky clothes?? So because you think she sounds a certain way she shouldn't be wear what she's comfortable with wearing? I've always hated classifying music. Who cares if it's pop, rock, heavy metal, punk, etc. ? You like what you like. I happen to like Avril's music. I think her album's really good. I don't get into the whole, is she punk, is she pop stuff. As for her personally...I don't know, I haven't heard a lot about her.

>>I've always hated classifying music. Who cares if it's pop, rock, heavy metal, punk, etc. ? You like what you like.<<
What's wrong with classifying music? There are certain types of music that sound alike, and therefore they are placed in a genre (rock, classical, blues, etc). I mean, jazz music is VERY different from heavy metal, and that's why they are in different categories.

I know jazz is very different than heavy metal but then there's people who start the 'this person isn't rock, they're metal' or 'this person isn't punk, they're pop'. I guess that's just a pet peeve of mine.

I don't like Avril Lavigne at all. She's an interchangeable singer. She thinks that she can be punk if she wears her ties and whatnot, and then not wear her "punk outfits" and be like "I could be Britney Spears if I wanted to", or whatever it was that she said in the article....Drives me crazy.

^^^ Yeah. A person's clothing style has nothing to do with their genre of music.

I think that the girl definitely has a lot of potential. Right now, I don't really know. I think that when she matures a bit, she'll be amazing. But at this moment, she's only seventeen, and I think she's having a blast with what she's doing. A lot of her songs are great. Most of the beat on some of her songs can be defined as poppy, but I think ya gotta actually listen to the lyrics to understand it all.
