This isn't relating to Christianity, but it's about religion and schools. They've just shut down the Hillel branch at Concordia University here in Montreal. Why you ask? They had a pamphlet on a table somewhere that advertised volunteering for the Israeli army. Supposedly, according to the Concordia Student Union, they've violated some law that says that you can't advertise the army of another country. In actuality, the law only says that you can't advertise the army of a country that you are at war with or that your enemies are at war with. Well, last time I looked, we weren't at war with Israel, and neither are any of our allies. What do you make of all of this?

I'd say Canada is becoming more PC than the US.
But that's another thing, you have all these laws that no one knows about but ignorance of the law is never an excuse either.
Was this a library that was shut down, and was this and an entire libray or just part of it?
Either way, it's a knee-jerk over reaction to what was probably just a movement or even just trying to make a statement.

Hillel is a Jewish organization that crosses Canada and the United States and operates out of college and university campuses. Concordia has one of the biggest branches in Canada. The student union has decided to stop funding to the organization, which is what is causing them to shut down.

<<Hillel is a Jewish organization that crosses Canada and the United States >> Do they have other schools other that the colleges? About 20 minutes out of Detroit is a Hillel Day School for those in K-6th grade. Seeing that made me wonder if it's the same deal because I recognized the name. And we go off topic. Ah well, trains of thought cannot be bridled.

Well, Hillel was a Jewish scholar, so a lot of things Jewish-related are named after him. But I was talking about a particular organization for colleges. Anyway, the ban's been revoked now. Curiously enough, the person on the student union who motioned for the ban was Jewish. *SIGH*

So I'm not allowed to say a silent prayer to myself? I thought it was that you couldn't pray with a group led by a teacher or someone working at the school? If I am right, then that is SO stupid! It's not like I'm pressuring someone to be a certain religion, or offending them by closing my eyes and whispering something to myself! And about the Christmas thing- Christmas is a lot of things to a lot of people. For me, Christmas isn't all about religion. It is all about being with my family and having fun, so to say "Merry Christmas" to someone shouldn't offend them, and if it does, too bad!

80s Child, okay that explains that one. Good thing they revoked that ban, nice to see cooler heads prevail. Lovelyducky you're right, some schools, a small percentage, do have strict rules about even silent prayer. Reason, the administration doesn't want students to "force" their religion on others. I guess the daily demands on your time and person are better than trying to settle your mind and get some peace in your heart.

Religions are fine, but when a Saudi King came to the US early this year, he requested that all women on the base be removed before he stepped on the tarmac, and no women pilots. And our leaders caved and did what he requested
I think it's probably for the best that we "caved" in order to prevent a major diplomatic incident. Politeness towards people of power, even ones with stupid ideas, is generally smart.

/\ No it's not, we can't let smaller countries walk all over us just because the PC police might be out there. No wonder 9-11 happened. The women in the US military probably had to work that much harder to "prove" themselves. They earned the right to be on that base and should be allowed to go wherever they want. A woman should have been on that tarmac with an M-16 and guiding the plane in. I could care less what some Saudi King wants, since he's a terrorist in disguise anyway.

^^Agreed. (Whoa, One Big Rush and I agreed again, time to mark this day on the calendar!) In North America, women are more or less equal to men. They have the right to work and the right to wear what they want, etc. I'm all for cultural relativism, but not when it comes to mistreating women or any other minority for that matter. The Saudi guy should have respected that North America treats women as equals (for the most part - some work remains to be done of course) and should not have made such a silly request. EDIT: Ok whoa, didn't see the last part of the post. No, I don't think the Saudi king is necessarily a terrorist in disguise. BUT, he needs to be respectful of our traditions when he's on our soil. End of story.

What the hell are you onj about boy? Opinions are one thing but you really go to an extreme sometimes honestly! I think the more you live in that attitude of yours that the world is against you, the more the world WILL start hating you. You can go around making allegations of this sort. I dont think you should be allowed to and I dont see why I should be critcised for telling you that you cant. Who the hell do you think you are?

I suggest that we all grow up, stop insulting each other for honest opinions, even if we DO strongly disagree with them, and return to the point of the discussion.
To me, that sounds more like an honest mistake than an attempt to prevent religion from influencing schools.
So I'm not allowed to say a silent prayer to myself?
I hadn't heard that, but if it's true, it is ridiculous.
some schools, a small percentage, do have strict rules about even silent prayer.
I do think silent prayer alone is fine, although I don't think silent prayer is a group is okay. That could easily become a problem and create pressure to be of a certain religion.
It's just, at least at my school, if you say you are a Christian, you will be looked down on.
Christianity isn't cool. So what?! Lots of things, including religion and political status, go in and out of style, and you can't expect your religion not to be influenced by that. Religion's influence is constantly shifting, so keep on believing what you believe, and be patient.
A lot of it is probably just the way teenagers go out of their way to be stupid and act immorally in the first place. So right now, your religious leaning is not backed by the majority of people in your school. Isn't that just the same as being any kind of small religion?
