I heard that there might come a pill that you can just order at the drugstore or whatever, to commit suicide. It's not decided yet if this is actually going to happen, and if it does, if it should be only for certain ages or something. What do you think about this? I'm not sure what my opinion about this is... I mean, quite often when people have attempted suicide but failed, they are glad to be alive afterwards. If you would take that pill, you would be sure that you wouldn't fail. And who says that it's actually going to be used for suicide? Any murderer could probably order it and then use it to kill someone else and make it look like suicide, right?? Anyway.. what do you think about this? [shadow=orange,left,300] ~*Esther*~[/shadow]

That's kinda weird. Why would they put out a pill so you can commit suicide when people are trying to cut down all the suicides that are happening? I don't see how that pill could ever become legal, and I hope it never does.

Um, that's completely moronic. Why would people produce a pill for others to commit suicide? I mean..I KNOW people who've tried to commit suicide or have thought of it. And they've failed to succeed- thankfully. And now they see that it was a mistake. But if they took this pill- they wouldn't be here today. I can't believe people even thought of this .Grrrr

That would go against every belief that I have. There are already enough ways for someone to take the easy way out and kill themselves, you shouldn't just put this option right at their disposal! Suicide is against the law, it makes no sense to put that sort of option right at someone's fingertips.

I disagree 100%. I can't belive there would be a pill that would do that! As another poster said "There are already enough ways for people to kill themselves". Why would we want one more? In case people haven't realized, suicide is PERMANENT! You CAN'T say "Oh, that was a dumb desicion, I think I'll take that back now." There are other ways to work out your problems, and suicide is NOT a good one.

I find it kind of difficult to believe that any government would approve of this. However, there already are numerous ways to commit suicide painlessly. I think that if someone wants to kill themselves, they're going to do it, and a pill is yet another painless way to do it. I mean, if you overdose on a bottle of sleeping pills, you're probably going to die. What's the difference between doing that, and taking just one pill to kill yourself? But as I said before, I doubt this is true.

I think I should add that this is all going on in my country, which is the Netherlands. The pill would be meant especially for old people who feel that they don't have a purpose in life anymore. The percentage of suicides among people above 70 is 5 times higher than in any other age category. Some people think it's better for the person who wants to commit suicide to take the pill instead of for exaple hanging themself or jumping off a building, because it would cause less trauma's for the family and friends. I still think it's sort of useless. There are enough ways to commit suicide anyway.

^Isnt euthanasia legalized in the Netherlands?? I completely disagree with this issue. But I guess when I think about this issue occuring in the Netherlands, I really do not doubt its truth. Nothing like this would ever pass in America, but it doesnt seem all that unlikely to me for the Netherlands.

Yeh a lot of problems could arise if this pill is put on the market, like Sunny said.. what's stopping murderers from buying it and using it on other people... and the suicide rates are bad enough as it is, without it being made even easier for people. In hospitals i think it's a different story, because the people who want to die, usually haven't got much of a reason to live, because even if they do, they'd only be living a life of pain and sickness, and would be in so much more peace after they had died. So i'm not saying Euthenasia (sp?) is necessarily wrong, but i don't think it should be available to just anyone.

This pill is only legal in one of two countries (sorry, I don't remember which). A few days ago, my mother and I were watching a show on this. From what I saw, not everyone can use the pill. Only people who are seriously sick can use it. The person who takes the poisoned pill is never alone. The person has to swallow the pill and try to fall asleep. A few hours later, the person's dead. I might be wrong though.[/size]

^ That sounds more like euthanasia, because it's just for really ill people... right?

This sounds completely idiotic. Why would there be a need for a pill such as this? We already have troubles with suicide in this country. Why add one more reason?

if they do pass this (which i would totally be PO'ed if they did) then i personally think that the scientists should be charged for ever "murder" (or suicide) that is commited.
