I think it is a load of crap that this NYC mayor is trying to ban smoking in all restaurants and bars. When did we give government the power to regulate what private law-abiding citizens do in private establishments?

No, I don't think smoking should be banned. I mean, I disagree with smoking...and I don't do it myself, but it's legal and it's a people's choice. As long as there is a separate smoking/non-smoking sections, I don't see why we all can't be happy with just that? If they take away the smoking privledges in restaurants and bars......then those places are probably going to lose a little bit of business, eh?

^^^^^^
Also smoking doesn't have the same effects has something like weed does. Yeah it can make you sick and you can have lung cancer (and in some cases...Some peple have to use a certain instrument to talk.) and it could of course kill you. But it doesn't get you high.
You are mostly hurting yourself.

My sentiments exactly. A restuarant is a private establishment, and if the owner wants to allow people to smoke, then he/she should certainly be allowed to do that. And if smoke bothers you that much, then don't go to restaurants that allow smoking. It's as simple as that.

When did we give government the power to regulate what private law-abiding citizens do in private establishments?if and when the government decides it would be better not to smoke outside on the porch, or something like that, yes, there will be a lot of pissed off people. but in my opinion, they shouldn't ban smoking in bars. that's probably the one place that everyone smokes! in restaurants, they do a very good job at separating the smokers and the non-smokers. i've seen restaraunts were they'll stick the smokers towards the ceiling so the smoke will hit there (and stay there) so the non smokers won't be ticked . My sentiments exactly. A restuarant is a private establishment, and if the owner wants to allow people to smoke, then he/she should certainly be allowed to do that. And if smoke bothers you that much, then don't go to restaurants that allow smoking. It's as simple as that.people shouldn't have to choose to spend a night at home just because they don't want to smell smoke. besides, you smell smoke even when your cooking at home (heck...i burn stuff all the time when i cook!). but if the restaurant owner(s) get a lot of complaints about the smoking, they can try to separate them more. on nice days, have the smokers outside. or even have all smokers at the bar, and if a non-smoker wants to sit at the bar, that's their problem.

And restaurants shouldn't have to accomodate everyone. They are PRIVATE establishments, and therefore can allow any activity they want, as long as it is legal. And too bad if smoke bothers you so much when you're sitting halfway across the room from it. The restaurant has no obligation to provide you with what you want. You have the choice to go there or not to go there.

Smoking should be banned in public because for some of us it can be dreadful.. I mean me, my mum and my brother are either sick or nearly sick *everytime* anyone lights-up around us. In the past week I've had to go to college three times and I've almost been sick about 12 times just on the way to college which can get annoying and boring. There are only a few place I can go in public that I can go and have a nice time without having the problem of being sick.. if I go out for a meal with my family we can't go *near* the smoking section or I'd be sick all the way through the meal.. Thankfuly I know some of the locals at my favourite pub and when I go in they put there ciggs out but if I go somewhere new to me or somewhere people aren't conciderate I risk being sick thankfully in the .uk the govenment is trying to make it illegal to smoke in public I just hope for my stomac's sake that it is made law

^^^ I think that drugs should be legal, too. People should be able to do whatever they want with their bodies. If they kill themselves because of drug use, that's their own fault.

/\ As long as my medical insurance doesn't keep going up because people want to keep inhaling smoke and fumes from burning leaves, people can do what they want.

Smoking is giving people lung cancer, and killing people every day. <<<I think that drugs should be legal, too. People should be able to do whatever they want with their bodies. If they kill themselves because of drug use, that's their own fault.>>> How would you feel if drugs became legal and someone you were very close to strted abusing them, and they overdose. I bet that you would want them to be illegal then. What about the babies? They're mothers smoke and they get second-hand smoke. How do babies avoid second hand smoke? They eventually learn how to crawl.*

^^You see this all the propaganda that you have been fed your whole life. I dont smoke and I have never so much as inhaled a ciggerette, but if somebody wants to, that is their bussiness, not yours, not the government.

Actually, I would not want them illegal. First of all, if a friend of mine wanted to do drugs, she would get a hold of them regardless if they were illegal. And this is a poor argument. That's like saying that if a friend died of a heart attack, I'd want bacon and eggs to become illegal. People have their own free will, and it's not up to the government to protect them from activities that only harm themselves.

I might have a poor argument, but mine makes sense. You'd want smoking banned too, if a family member that you loved very much died of smoking, like a person very close to me has. She was just 16 when she started smoking. These "cancer sticks" are killing people every year. More than you'll ever know.
