Well, I think it should be banned when people have to be around it, and there's nothing separating non smokers form smokers. Say in restaurants, stores, etc. Smoking is even worse secondhand, and it's not fair to non smokers to force them out when they just want to eat, shop, etc.

My dad is a heavy smoker, and although he's trying to give up, I don't like being around him when he lights up a cigarette because the smell, or taste, of the smoke is unbearable. About 600 people die of secondhand each year, and that's just where I live. I don't think it's fair for anyone to die because of someone else, that's unjustified. But, I don't think smoking should be banned. For those who are smokers, like my dad, I can only imagine how difficult it must be to give up something you are literally addicted to. I think there should be No Smoking zones in restaurants and other public places, and I think giving up smoking should be more encouraged - it's a better and more positive solution than just cutting off cigarettes without considering the decision as a smoker.

well, in response to the thing about smoking in restuarants, i hate it, i absolutely hate it. they have these things that are called smoke-eaters. and they do a pretty good job--if the smoke is blown towards them. but if not, your on your own. my friend belongs to SWAT. i am thinking about joining. my mother smokes, but by walking into the house or smelling her clothes you could never tell. she smokes [glow=maroon,2,300]MAYBE[/glow] twice a day, if that. so, yeah. i really dont like smoking, it should definetly be banned, it would be better for both of us, their health and our health.

No, I don't think smoking should be banned. I don't think it's a nice habbit in any way, but while smoking is legal, you can't ban it from places. If smoking is legal, then people should be allowed to do it wherever they like. Most smokers know that non-smokers dislike the smell of cigarettes or whatever, and many of them are respectful of that. But whilst smoking is totally legal, I don't feel you can ban people from doing it wherever they like. At least not make a law out of it. If restaurants want to say they'll have no smokers then fine, that's their decision and in many cases their loss of businesses. But people have freedom in Britain and the USA to do as they so wish.
Yeah, it's a totally disgusting habbit, but it's legal. I don't know about the USA, but in Britain, you can't smoke in shops, and there are divided areas in cafes and restaurants. If people want to smoke, they should be allowed to.
You won't see a Government making smoking illegal or banned... firstly a Government makes loads of money from smokers buying cigarettes; secondly it would increase people commiting illegal offenses. Many people will smoke or do drugs... whatever the law says.

I don't think it should be banned. I just think they should ban it from public buildings, like restaraunts and stuff. I hate the smell of smoke, and I hate when I go to a restaraunt, and am sitting in the non smoking section, yet still gagging from all the smoke that's in there. I think they could wait an hour or so until they're done eating to smoke. If they can't wait, why can't they just go outside?

I think it should be banned in restaurants because it definately is not sanitary! If someone wants to smoke so badly, they can go outside to do it, I'm sure it won't hurt them.

No, I don't think smoking should be banned. It's their choice for smoking...but I do think it's very rude for people to have to breath that smoke. It's disgusting. People should be more considerate - if they want to smoke, fine...but they should do it when no one else is around.

i don't understand why it's legal to smoke or drink as much as you want (provided you're of legal age) but you can't smoke pot. cigarettes and excessive alcohol are just as if not more harmful than marijuana..... i'm not pro-drugs - i've never tried any, nor have i ever smoked or drank. but i think if one is going to be illegal, maybe they all should be. i'm not really opinionated on this topic but it does make me wonder... anyways, back to the original topic. yes i think smoking should be banned.... it was just banned in my city. unfortunately i work in a restaurant a little outside the city so they can still smoke there. it sucks because i love my job but i know i'm killing my lungs working there.

I think smoking should be banned in public places and that's it. People know the risks when they start despite how "cool" it is or whatever their excuse. It's not fair to ask them to just give it up. I mean, I'm not going to give up drinking because there's an off-chance I may cause a drinking and driving accident. Second hand smoke IS dangerous, that's why I think it being banned in public places is effective. But what people do in their own homes is their choice.

I do not think the government has any right to ban smoking anywhere on any private property. I think that property owners may have a moral obligation to barr smoking from there premises but I do not believe that the gvt has that particular right.
As for banning smoking, the notion is rediculous. If people choose to smoke and harm their own body it is none of my bussiness, it is none of your bussiness, and it is definitely not the bussiness of our gvt.
If private companies want to make that product it is none of my bussiness either.
And personally I think that second hand smoke is over-rated.

I agree with everything that pettyluv said. It is for those very reasons that I also think drugs should be legalized.

I don't think smoking should be banned altogether, because people do have rights, and what they do with their body is on them.
However, I do think it should be banned from places such as restuarants. Sure, there are non-smoking sections, but you can still smell the smoke. And sure, you could just avoid that particular restaurant, but let's face it, almost every single restuarant around has a smoking section, so what are non-smokers supposed to do? Never go out to eat?
If people want to smoke on their own property, by all means, go ahead, but when out in public, sometimes they need to be a little more considerate of the non-smokers. They have lives and need to get out too, and it's not fair to them to have to breathe that stuff in, especially when they have no choice.
I also have a big issue with second-hand smoke, especially when little kids are around. They don't know what's going on, and it's slowly affecting them, especially if they're in a household with it. I don't care what anyone says, secondhand smoke does kill.
