I get really really offended too. I used to say it all the time, but I guess since we have been studying the Holocaust in school, I'm a lot more open minded about this kind of stuff.

Yes I do get offended because I AM gay. I used to say 'faggot' and 'this is gay' a lot but that was when I was in elementary school and didn't know much better. I grew out of it.
I wouldn't get offended if I heard it once in a while, but I hear it all the time. People are constantly calling other people 'faggots' or 'dykes' at school and it just pisses me off. They're using terms that make it sound like it's a bad thing, and they call eachother that to cuss eachother out.
Whenever I am about to say something like that (yes sometimes you just say it automatically cause you hear it all the time) I just think of myself and how I hate hearing it because it makes me want to wish I was straight. It makes some gay people ashamed of what they are, especially gay teens who are just discovering their sexuality.
Just think of how the gay people like myself feel when you say something like that. Put yourself in our shoes.

I have never said anything degrading as of mentioned previously. Ever. I pride myself on that. People are not allowed to say those remarks around me. Just as they are not allowed to say racist jokes. Using that phrase gives people the impression your homophobic, ignorant, and can't use another word that isnt insulting others. Just like saying "thats's retarded". If you had a sister that had a disability, would you appreciate someone using that phrase? I sure hope not. The main topic phrase is slang that has only became popular recently. I dont want to hear it said and shouldnt have to hear hate speech. As for describing objects, um, how could it? there just isnt homosexual phones, cars, etc.

^^^ Um, excuse me? How does referring to something as "gay" or "retarded" qualify as hate speech? To me, something that would be considered hate speech would be saying "all gay people are the spawns of satan and deserve to be shot". Also, even though that's a terrible thing to say, I also think that it should be legal to say it. This politically correct bullshit pisses me off so much. Why should I have to rephrase something just because the way I want to say it *may* offend someone? Well, I'm not going to do that. If I want to say something is retarded, then I sure as hell am going to say that. All it means is that I think something is very stupid. If someone gets offended by something as insignificant as that, then that's their problem. We have freedom of speech in this country. Therefore we aren't ever prohibited from making crude racist remarks, let alone saying something that is only potentially offensive.

I never said it should be illegal. I am aware of freedom of speech. Sometimes its not insignificant, maybe to you but not to others. Say all the crude racist or homophobic remarks you want, nobody's stopping you. Just because its allowed doesnt mean its right. This is simply MY opinion. You cant argue an opinion.

It pisses me off to no end. And I let people know, too. I don't see homsexuality as something to throw around as an insult, because I don't believe there is anything wrong with it. Sometimes, I ask them why it's such a good thing. For instance, if someone calls something gay--I see homsexuality as a good thing...just like I see hetersexuality, bisexuality, transexuality...and the courage it takes to openly express it is something I respect a great deal (just not the fakes). It makes absolutely no sense to use it as an insult, especially around someone who would see it as a good thing. And Cass, I agree with you on the freedom thing. It's ridiculous that someone can come and decide that what another person is saying is a "hate speech" and they can legally get into trouble. Freedom of speech my ass. I take a lot of crap for saying this, but I have some remote respect for the KKK (I am only half white, don't give me shit until you see what I have to say) because they are not afraid to be politically incorrect and express their opinions openly. Now, I don't respect that they deliberately try to hurt people emotionally, and some physically. I don't respect their cause, I find it disgusting. I don't respect anything else about them, and I know that they all tie in, but the simple fact that they are willing to express unpopular opinion is a respectable quality. Not how they express it or the opinions they express--but the fact that they can do it. Sorry for being off topic, I tend to do that

what i feel: my good friend, amazing person / musician / student all that, just came out to me. and i like her none less. this made me increasingly sensitive to the topic of "thats sooo gay!". how would i feel, if i was gay, and everything wrong, and negative, and unfavourable was referred to as gay. secondly, to those of you that don't agree with being homosexual, you don't need to be hateful. it doesn't matter what you believe about homosexuality, it matters what you believe about being a patron of equality, and of love for your fellow person. a lot of my friends, and myself are very religious people. the majority of them believe that homosexuality is not what G-d would want people to be like. however, i never hear them saying hateful things. ever. lastly, inanimate objects can't be gay. gay as in happy = NO. gay as in homosexual = NO. they're f*cking INANIMATE! >:(and yes, "gay" is just a term, and you can use whatever terms you want, and you can choose to not care, all in the name of free speech and freedom of opinion. i can also think you are idiots, and laugh at your narrow minded right wing bourgeoisie behaviour all i want. and i will. ;D *stands patiently for the eggs to be thrown* ~*pobo ;D

A friend of mine recently came out too. She's not ready to come out to everyone yet (only about five people know) and this is due to the way the words "gay" and "homosexual" have such a bad meaning. Homosexuality is still not accepted, and I think using words like "faggot" to describe your locker not opening, or your computer freezing isn't going to bring tolerance anytime soon. My friend is also very sensitive about the words "gay" and such being used in bad ways, which has made me even more aware of it.

okay, that's fine. but when i started babysitting about 3-4 years ago, i was told that never say anything in front of a child that you wouldn't want your children saying. i thought that my sister was nuts when she said that to me. the other week i was babysitting a one year old. and when she fell off her bed do you know what she said "God da*n it!". the thing that shocked me is that a one year old said that. i didn't know what to say. but think about this: if you ever have children, and one of them happens to be disabled, are you gonna call them "retarted", saying that they are very stupid?

sry, have one more thing to say...this is basically to ageofsolar and anyone else who is gay or bi. my bff is bi, and she has a whole bunch of friends who are either bi, gay, or a lesbian. and my bff gets so freaking sick and tired of people saying that "that's so gay!" so whenever she's around her friends, family, and in the public, etc, and there's something really stupid, she says "OMG! that's so hetero!". i personally think that that's kinda cool. maybe it'll finally make straight people ease up on the "name calling".

I never want children, so that's not really an issue for me. And anyway, "mentally disabled" people ARE mentally retarded. I don't understand why we have to have a sugar-coated word for everything.

>>I don't understand why we have to have a sugar-coated word for everything.<<
we don't use a sugar-coated word for everything. but when i found out that i had depression, people started calling me "crazy", "insane", and some more words along those lines. once people start calling you things like that, esp. every day, then you'll believe it, and you'll start acting like it. so if you call someone "retarted" instead of "disabled", that's making them feel less of themselves than what they really are.

^^^ Um, I have three mental disorders, depression being one of them. Anyway, depression is so commonplace. Everyone is depressed, or so it seemed. If someone called me crazy because of my mental disorders, then I'd just shrug it off. Having a chemical imbalance in your brain doesn't necessarily make you crazy or mentally unstable. Although, there are times when I feel like I'm messed up, but I that's just how I am and I don't expect other people to pretend that I'm normal, because I know that I'm not.
