I still say it is just a term and if people say it, it is none of my bussiness. It is no different then saying a shirt is "cool" now is the shirt really "cool??" No, of coarse not, it is just a term fallen into everyday use. Or if you ask someone about a movie, and they say it was "stupid," now do you suppose we should stop saying that on the count that we might offend stupid people?? It is just a term and shouldnt be taken as anything more.

Yes, but noone would ever be offended by calling something 'cool', because in the first place, cool is used in a positive way, and in the second place, 'cool' doesn't stand for a certain group of people. Calling something 'gay' is discrimination, that's just the way it is.

^^What about stupid people?? When you say something or someone is stupid, arent we demeaning those less intelligent than other??

No, that is your opinion, it is not just the way it is.

'Stupid' is objective. It's not like there is a specific group of people who are all, always, called 'stupid'. And besides, I think when you call someone 'stupid', you don't particularly mean that they are not intelligent... It's the same as calling anything else 'stupid'... It's sort of hard to explain what I mean. ~*Esther*~

i kinda agree with pettyluv. when i first came to this thread i started feeling uilty about calling stuff "gay" and i quit for a while. but then i got thinking about it and i realized i shouldn't be made to feel guilty for something i don't this is so wrong. granted some people don't appreciate that i say things are 'gay' but it IS just a term so i'll probably keep using it.

No offense, Lari, but I definitely think you SHOULD feel guilty for using it, and I definitely think you SHOULDN'T continue. It makes me so, so, mad when I hear someone say something stupid like "Yo man, that's the gayest f*cking shirt I've ever seen!" Not only do they sound like complete and total morons (and embarassments to teenagers), but they degrade our society and homosexuals in particular. I'll tell someone off for saying that sort of thing...I do, a lot. People have thought that I'm a lesbian-- but why does that matter? Am I not allowed to be friends with a lesbian? Suppose we said "American" in place of "gay" or "faggot." Wouldn't that offend an American greatly to hear, everyday, all day, "What a stupid American..."? (Like what Esther said. Yeah.) "It is just a term and shouldnt be taken as anything more." -pettyluv What about Matthew Shepard? It's people using words like "fag" that caused his death. BIGOTRY is just a term. A thought for everyone out there: the word "faggot" actually means "a bundle of sticks." Yo man, check out that bundle of sticks in the pink shirt... Love, ~The Kitten~

A couple of years ago I was guilty of calling things 'gay'. But I don't anymore because now I know that it's offensive and shouldn't be used in that way. And though I do not have the right to tell people what they are allowed to say all of my friends know that I do not like that term at all as well as 'queer', 'fag', 'faggot' etc. Now they try not to use those words, at least when they are around me. And now whenever somecris

Sorry, I didn't get to finish my last statement cuz my computer went all weird for a minute.
What I meant to say was ~ Now when I hear someone around me say 'he's such a fag/faggot' or whatever I say 'I don't see any sticks' or something to that effect.

<<No offense, Lari, but I definitely think you SHOULD feel guilty for using it, and I definitely think you SHOULDN'T continue. >>
I see no reason for someone to feel guilt for such a term. She can continue if she damn well pleases. It is a benign phrase in my mind. Is it any different than being called a "dumb blonde?" I'm blonde, and I dont see this as a horrendous term, what is the difference? Is it any less demeaning? They are just terms that have fallen into common usage in our society and do not offend me in the least.
<<What about Matthew Shepard? It's people using words like "fag" that caused his death. >>
Ya...ok...using a term does not conote the death of homosexuals. You dont have to hate gays to use a term.
<<A thought for everyone out there: the word "faggot" actually means "a bundle of sticks." Yo man, check out that bundle of sticks in the pink shirt... >>
So are you now too fighting for the rights of sticks? Why do you care if people make asses out of themselves?

^^^ Do you know how the word "faggot" came to be synonymous with homosexuals? It was because in England, when they used to burn witches, they used gay people as fuel rather than a bundle of sticks. When you think about it, that word has a pretty horrible connotation. Calling a gay person a faggot is like calling a black person a nigger. I mean, you have the right to use it, but you can't expect people to think that it's "just a word".

Actually, I don't mind people making fools of themselves. It amuses me to no end. Let me rephrase what I was trying to say...it's stereotypes like these that allow people to feel better than others (which is natural, I suppose, but in a bad sense, if that makes sense). And supposing you're gay and I've been raised and conditioned to think that being gay is disgusting and wrong, and I'm a better person than you because I'm straight...what's to keep me from thinking gay people should be killed? Drastic ideas, of course, but some people think like that. If we continually demean homosexuals, however unintentionally, people can begin to consider gays "bad." Do you see what I'm trying to say? I hope this is clearer. Love, ~The Kitten~

^^^Wonderfully said, Cass. Thank you. (You posted while I was still typing, so...ya know.) Actually, I never knew that about the term "faggot"...that's horrible. Is that really true?? God, how awful... Love, ~The Kitten~

^^I really doubt that story is true. It just really makes no sense to me in the least. Why would they need people to set other people on fire?? Where would they find this abundance of gays to burn?? Correct me if I am wrong but this sounds to me like an urban legend at its purest to me. It just seems to defy logic.

^^Griffin I think it is obviously possible to disagree with the gay lifestyle without calling for genocide! I really fail to see the link. If someone is going to kill another person they are not going to decide to take this action because someone said the shirt looks gay on them.

>>Is it any different than being called a "dumb blonde?" I'm blonde, and I dont see this as a horrendous term, what is the difference? Is it any less demeaning?<< Obviously, it makes no sense to call someone a "dumb blonde" either. But I think that the reason you are not offended by it, is because blondes are usually not really being discriminated. Of course this term makes no sense either, but I personally don't know anyone who actually has anything against blondes. There are quite a lot of people who have something against homosexuals though, either against their 'lifestyle' or against them in general. That's why homosexuals - and a lot of heterosexuals too - usually are offended by the use of this term, and that alone, on my opinion, should be enough reason not to use the term. ~*Esther*~
