Do you think the World Trade Center should be re-built?
I don't think there's a way to please everyone on this one. The terrorist want us to fear rebuilding the towers. The US should not let the terrorists win by not rebuilding the WTC. But building two towers just to prove unity, freedom and power, is not going to work. Just because it got hit before means working there comes with some additional risk. But the problem with re-building is the obvious threat of new terrorism, and no insurance company is likely to insure the buildings. It would be too emotional for people to work in there. The WTC site is sacred ground. Thousands of people died there and it would not be right to build anything but a memorial on top of it. They should build a huge plaque and engrave all the names of the deceased along with a message from their families. ******************* On the other hand, this is taken from an article written by Jonah Goldberg, posted on Razzberry: "My favorite suggestion came from one reader who said we should rebuild the Towers with the names Freedom and Unity, and let the terrorists figure out what the initials stand for."

It will be a natural target... I mean they bombed it in 93 and destroyed it in 01, what would stop them from doing it again? Like I said before it is not giving in, it is using your head.

I totally don't think we should re-build....why?It would just be another target for some dumb-a** Group to bomb. And another thing why would you wanna work in some place that people died in...The WTC Grounds are now sacred and therefore it should be a Memorial....I wouldn't want to work there.

I don't think that it should be rebuilt. I think a monument with all of the people that dies in the attacks names on it. No matter how many names there are they should all recieve recognition. Also, there should be a larger one with all of the names of the fire fighters that dies in it with a short statement about them.

Okay.. well I seem to differ from all of you.
I actually would like to see the towers rebuilt.
It would be a way to sort of "move on" if you know what I mean. I'm not saying to forget what happened, but to show that we are still strong and we will remain strong and not fear them. Do you get what I'm saying? If you don't, I'm sorry, it's late right now.
I'm a New Yorker. I may live on Long Island, but I have been to the city many times throughout my life, and passed it much more times going on vacations. The towers were always my New York City, as I know it was for many others. If you mention Manhattan to me, the first thing that pops into my head are those towers. Not the Empire State Building, not the Statue of Liberty.. the World Trade Center.
Just last month I had to pass by the city on the way to New Jersey? Do you know just how depressing it was to actually see the huge gap where the towers used to be? Sure, you see it from pictures, but actually seeing the area in real life right in front of you. It's sad.
I think the towers should be rebuilt. They need to find a way to make the building more durable and safe. Maybe not as tall, I don't know. But I just think it's what New York needs.

Amen to ashmaddie; leaving a big ol' fat blank hole isn't a good idea. I think there ought to be some kind of memorial at the site, perhaps with the names of the people that died on Sept. 11, but not something that would take up ALL THAT SPACE. They definitely need to rebuild them, and I think the biggest smack in the pants to the terrorists would to remake them as they were, perhaps dedicating a big wall in the front of the buildings as a memorial or something.
As for it being a natural target for more problems, what about the other big buildings in the world? Should we go and level them to build shorter towers?! Heck no; that's a waste of time and not to mention the extra space needed to make them all shorter--they'd either have to be a whole lot smaller or a whole lot fatter to accomidate the extra space in a shorter tower.
Like Hermione said: it's a landmark. It's a big symbol of the city, and letting that be forever taken away by terrorists is wrong.

I heard a very good idea a while ago from one of my friends: Rebuild the towers, but build 3. Two shorter ones, and in the middle, a pretty tall one. Anyone able to guess what that one would stand for? We'd be giving the terrorists the bird pretty much and I agree with that. They should not be able to do what they did and not have something like that errected. Along with the 3 towers, there should be a memorial, but only building a memorial... I don't know, it just feels like giving in partly to me.

*L* Somehow I think a lot of Americans would be pretty insulted with a giant middle finger, even if it is pointed towards terrorists. Still quite funny, though.

heres my opinion
I think the WTC should get rebuilt,, yea its a target but that shows that we the USA stand strong and notthing can break that strength we have!
re building the towers will show that we have no fear and we cant be stopped
yea 9-11-01 will never be forgotten and it will be a sad day in history but are we also gonna have history think that we arn't a strong nation and will let an attack stop us?? we need to show that were strong and have faith!!

I'm not fully decided on this. If we did rebuild it, all the work may be for nothing because what if someone bombs it again?

^^^As with any other building out there, it's a target. Someone could decide to blow my house to bits, but they'd still build a neighborhood of "potential targets" down the street. It's silly to waddle in fear over this and the idea of the WTC as a target.

^^Obviously a new WTC would be a much more inviting target to terrorists than your home! An insurance company would be mad to cover such a structure after their great loss of money at 9-11. It is very idealistic to say we should go out and build one in defiance, but it just seems illogical to me. Would you really want to work in a building that has a bulls-eye drawn on it?

I say build a WTC elsewhere in New York City, and bigger, taller and better. The height of the buildings wasn't the reason the Terrorists were so sexually attracted to knocking it down. The WTC was a symbol of wealth and power. Remember they also hit the Pentagon, not a very tall building. But it is a symbol of our military might, and they also wanted to take out the White House or Capitol Building, because of the leadership these buildings represent.
