Ms.Than_Has_IT_All-----Well said.
Cassiopeia when you said they don't have musical talent because they "can't sing or play instruments". Some might, ex. Wyclef plays guitar, and some do sing maybe they not thriving to be good but some sing and rap. Also some rappers are known for their beats. Such as Pharell of the Neptunes (fogot the other guy's name) He's provided beats for many rappers. He's also provided a beat for Britney Spears and other non-rappers. Timberland is another rapper known for his beats.
Also when you said "every other freaking word is a slang word" ----well that's because of how they talk in everyday conversation, which is another way of expressing themselves.
Well, there's my 50 cents.
5-4

^^^^^^ Loved the way you put that. I forgot about Wyclef Jean. I hear him singing,I really don' hear much rap,if not any, from him. And He does play guitar.

^^^Well, thank you. Lol. I was just thinking that too about Wyclef. He doesn't really rap that much. I thought he did a little on that new song with Claudette off of City High....not sure.

Well, just because someone is able to play an instrument doesn't necessarily mean they are good at it. But anyway, I said that *rapping* doesn't take talent to do. So obviously if these people are singing and playing instruments in some of their songs, then what they are doing in those songs takes talent, providing that they sing and play well. However, if I hear someone just talking fast to a beat, I'm not going to think that they express their talent in that particular song, because they aren't doing anything that anyone else couldn't do.
>>Also when you said "every other freaking word is a slang word" ----well that's because of how they talk in everyday conversation, which is another way of expressing themselves.<<
Maybe that's how they talk in everyday conversation (which makes me respect them even less) but that doesn't mean that they should talk that way in their lyrics. Writers and poets don't write exactly how they speak. If that's all they did, then they wouldn't be considered talented. To write well, you have to be able to use proper written language to effectively tell a story or convey an idea.

To write well, you have to be able to use proper written language to effectively tell a story or convey an idea. You don't necessarily have to use 'proper' written language to effectively tell a story or convey an idea. Especially in songs or poems. When people use slang they use that they use in everyday life they're putting a personal touch to it. Not that it should be all slang, but I think it's more meaningful if the artist uses something that represents them.
As for not needed talent to be a rapper...I'm kinda undecided to that. I can see both sides. Rapping is talking, everyone can do it...but there's a certain...flare that has to be put in it. I know I, for one, would make a horrible rapper.
And if anyone's wondering, I like Eminem. I think he's a very talented lyricist and performer.

^^^I agree. Rapping with slang adds a piece of them into it, because that's apart of their personality.
Also I think rapping does require some talent because think of it this way. If two people were having a freestyle contest, you gotta think quick, come up with some good words, it's gotta make sense, have some good comebacks and all go along with the beat. A lot of people could do that. But not a lot are great at it.

Okay you all probably don't care...but I wanted to share this with you anyway. This was a freestyle posted on a freestyle board. It's tittled "What It Takes To Be An Emcee" it goes with what we're all talking about----- whether rapping needs talent. ;D
It ain't being an emcee that's the difficult-bit but to gain a rep for not droppin' typical-**** gaining-respect while always staying-ya-best not sacrificing ya cred to get ya name-on-a-check patience-a-virtue record execs aiming-to-hurt-you stay home to have familiar faces-to-turn-to know-it's-a-business they want you to be showing-the-*****es prepare for your illest ****to be flowed-with-no-witness to be tight you need the right combination get in the sudio and find it, forget conversation observation is a key part to your style-and-flow see what works and doesn't, try-you'll-know so dig deep and once you've found the emcee-inside just remember this and please lend-me-some-time cuz face it I made all of you be- rappers now I"m gonna lay down the key-factors diversity, integrity, variety, inspiration beats, rhymes, individuality and innovation All important things you need to be-or-do but number one on the list is being-you
Okay I'm done. Lol. That's my 50 cents.

But I know what you mean,my fiend,Cilla's (little) brother (who's white) was like rapping or singing or something, and then this (black) guy,Bryon, comes over and says something about this short little dude that they're friends with, like he was checkin' him,ya'know?? I mean they were both good at it,but Bryon comes up and gets all his words while he's saying it,I was like, damn! Cause I've never actually heard someone freestyle,like...in 'real-liFe' . *I added what their race was, because a lot of white people where I'm from can't do it*

i used to hate him, but now, i'm still not a huge fan or anything, but i do have to give him credit for mocking Osama in his music video....i don't think any of the other entertainers out there did that, & i know that what Em did took a LOT of guts....

^^^ I don't understand why it would take guts to make fun of Osama Bin Laden. Practically everyone in America hates him, so it's not like it's an unpopular opinion, or anything.

^^it took guts b/c he's in the public eye & most celebs wouldn't take a jab at Osama for fear that the public might not like it, or that Osama himself might get pissed & make Em his next target.....
