I have a large amount of respect for this man. Not many people see his real side...but I'm pretty positive that it, too, can be loving, caring, and sensitive. I was watching MTV News just today... ------------------------------------------------------ "As an artist, you wanna keep a certain mystique," he says. "I don't ever want everybody to know everything that I'm joking about and serious about. That's the fun with creating and doing music — leaving that mystique for people's imaginations so they can get what they wanna get out of it. I guess." says rap artist, Eminem. Eminem is also unafraid to come from behind the curtain and expose himself as Marshall Mathers, the man who admits to feeling like he can get "eaten alive" by his insecurities. Beneath the potty-mouth posturing, it's just plain ol' double M. Marshall Mathers, product of a broken home who was, in his own words, "made to believe I was sick when I wasn't." Marshall Mathers, a 28-year-old divorced single father whose life seemingly revolves around the two biggest loves of his life (his daughter, Hailie, and hip-hop) and the two people he says have scarred him for life (his mother, Debbie, and ex-wife, Kim). Marshall Mathers, the "white Pac" and "spiteful, delightful new Ice Cube," the biggest — albeit most reluctant — pop star in the world who just wants his props as an MC. "I don't feel like I've said anything different from any other rapper in the history of hip-hop," Eminem vents. "I just believe that there's a spotlight on me because I connected with those kids in those suburban homes, because I look like them and they could relate to me. I connected with those kids, and those parents got mad." "It was a reality check," he continued. "It straightened me up and started making me realize, A, to calm down, and B, that this sh-- could all end tomorrow. My worst fear was, 'How am I gonna explain this to Hailie? What am I gonna say if I'm found guilty and I gotta do a prison sentence?' As a man I matured a lot, but I still like to clown and have fun," he says. "I have fun at my job. The day that I don't, I'll quit." That's Marshall Mathers, the misunderstood underground battle rhyme specialist who wants you to empathize with his pain. He tries to make you feel him again throughout his new album, especially on the ballad-y ode to his child, "Hailie's Song"; his narrative of anguish, "Say Goodbye Hollywood"; and the open letter to his estranged parent, "Cleaning Out My Closet." "I have to see after this album comes out," says Em, who raps about getting overlooked as one of the elite mic slayers on " 'Till I Collapse." "I'll have to see what happens as far as the respect level. Yeah, I feel like I've got credit. I obviously sold records. But the things that I feel are the greatest, the rhymes that I've actually sat there and worked on for hours — I don't get recognized for them. --------------------------------------------------- He seems like a very sweet man on the inside. His kid is so cute, too. Awww....

<<<< And hey, just because it's rap doesn't mean it can't have meaning! >>>> Exactly. I know a ton of songs [not all by EminEm] that have alot of meaning to it. And being rap doesn't make a difference. ;D

<< And hey, just because it's rap doesn't mean it can't have meaning! >>
exactly.
music is music. whether it is rap, country, rock, emo, new age......its all a form of expression and feeling. its just that people are pertained to certain tastes of music and interpret it different ways.

WTF! If you don't listen to the music, then how can you say its crap ?? They rap bout what they know and what they've experienced. Michelle Branch talks about someone that she knows is there and not there and shit cus thats how she felt, they talk about how they grew up in the hood and what they went threw and things they do - CUZ THATS HOW THEY FEEL. So are you saying they have crap feelings and experiences. (Weirdos) I don't see how why someone wouldn't recognize that as a talent. Thats just dumb - PLAIN AND SIMPLE!!! If you don't think rap is talent, then exactly what the hell do you think is talent ? PPl say that rappers disrespect women in their songs - not really true. They rap bout the women in their songs callin them hoes ! Cuz they are hoes, many of those women will proudly admit that. They know a real woman and they respect the REAL women, but not hoes - cus the hoes don't respect themselves - thats all there is to it. RAPPING IS A TALENT DAMNITT !!! I've never heard such things that it wasn't. It's cool if you don't like rap, but to say its not a talent is another.

^^^ I don't really care if they write about what they experience. That doesn't make them talented. They simply do not have musical talent in my opinion, because they cannot sing or play instruments. I don't give a damn if they write lyrics. First of all, most of their lyrics are crap. Just because they write about what they know doesn't mean that the lyrics are going to be good. I write down my feelings in my journal. Do I think that it's talented writing? Hell no. And in most of those rap songs, they don't even use proper grammar. I mean, every other freaking word is a slang word. It's just complete garbage. Oh, and about Michelle Branch; I don't respect her because she writes about what she experiences. Her lyrics are ok, but words aren't nearly as important as the music (because, after all, a song doesn't have to have lyrics to be considered music). She has a beautiful voice, and that's why I think she's talented.

Me and my mom today were talking about rap. I was actually talking about this board, hehe.
Well,my mom asked me,'Do you know why *I* don't like rap??" and I said "Cuz most of it talks about:Drugs,Sex,and killings??" and shes like "Right." But I do know, what Ms.Thang is saying. They are only expressing how they feel.
This may be [just] me,but I really don't think EminEm i using his feelings in some of his songs. (As in "My Name Is","Real Slim Shady" and "Without Me") It's just..fun stuff. But in other songs, such as "Guilty Conscience" "the Way I Am" I mean he's just saying what he thinks.
Yeah some people will disagree when I say 'I like rap, because they have talent!" But we all think differently and things,so they may not agree. But thta's exactly what I think. I think rap *is* talent. Yeah so everyone can practically write down how they feel, but we all do it different ways.

I adore the song that he wrote for his daughter, Hailie. How sweet is that? It shows how much he really does care and love. It shows the sweet side of him.
I like that side.

That I feel is an unfair generalization. Just because rappers don't play instruments in their shows or on the album doesn't mean they can't. You never know, maybe Eminem can play guitar. And the same goes for singing. Although this is off topic a little take Queen Latifa. Did you see her sing at the Oscars? OMG that girls got a wonderful voice. My mother was like, 'why the heck is she rapping when she can sing like that?' So yeah, to sum it up: just because they choose not to sing or play instruments doesn't mean they can't.
Eminem actually does sing on his new album though. In Hailie's Song. It's really sweet.
And in most of those rap songs, they don't even use proper grammar. I mean, every other freaking word is a slang word.
Yeah, this is true. And sometimes it does get a bit annoying when every other word used is 'yo'. But where does it say that in music proper grammar has to be used? Actually what's slang now may be 'proper grammar' in the future. It's an evolving language. That's why English doesn't sound the same or isn't spelled the same as it did in Shakespear's time.

<<<< Just because rappers don't play instruments in their shows or on the album doesn't mean they can't. >>>> I agree. I'm not sure if I've seen a rapper play an intrument, but I'm sure that one time someone did. Well, isn't it their job to rap anyway?? <<<< Eminem actually does sing on his new album though. >>>> Yep. I've heard half of some of the songs. But,I think,he does a better job rapping. But that song 'Hailie' for his daughter,i thought he sounded really good. <<<< That's why English doesn't sound the same or isn't spelled the same as it did in Shakespear's time. >>>> Or any time for that matter. Like you said,it's an evolving language. I actually like the slang words, alot of it even (kind of) rhymes with an actual word. And in some (rap) songs, slang sounds better than 'proper grammer'. Atleast to me it does.

Each man to his own. I like listening to Eminem's songs. Don't anybody pounce on me for that I don't admire him in any way. I see no particular talent in any of his cuss-filled songs, his moral values are far beyond rescue... and yet I enjoy listening to him. Maybe it's having somebody else do the cursing for me. As a person... I can't say I have any admiration for a person who says 'F*ck you, mum'.

<<<< I like listening to Eminem's songs. Don't anybody pounce on me for that >>>> I don't think anyone will. Atleadt I won't <<<< That's funny...a song is pretty much made up from lyrics, yet if you don't take that seriously, what would you? >>>> So I guess you would take the 'Barney theme song' seriously too??
I know that's a big difference, but that's also mad up of lyrics. Just like EminEm. <<<< I can't say I have any admiration for a person who says 'F*ck you, mum'. >>>> I admire him. Not because he sings about Killing his wife and makes fun of his mom in his videos. I admore him the same way I do a user that has also been apart of this debate. They both speak their mind--Which is great!!!!!! ;D

I listen to Eminem, and I like his music. But last night I was listening to "Superman", my most recent favorite of his, and I was just like "This is horrible, how can I actually listen to this and enjoy it" Some of the stuff he says is really just . . . not good. But for some reason, I like it anyway. Ha, my mom would say I'm being brainwashed. But I love music. Including his. I can't go anywhere without having the radio on or a cd player with me. I fall asleep with the radio on every night. (My mother hates that) But anyway, yes I listen to Eminem and yes I like it, whether or not I agree with what he says. But I don't think I have to.
That was just my two cents, but anyway . . . ;D
