<<Then why not just read poetry?>>
I do read poetry, and I enjoy it. I even try writing it sometimes. I actually spend most of my time online looking at song lyrics, finding new songs, etc. I always find an artist I like, look for lyrics that speak to me, and then download the song.
The melody is an added bonus, and provides a nice background to the lyrics. It is important, and is what makes the lyrics music. I just find more beauty in a song that emotionally touches me, rather than something that just has a good melody. I'm mostly into alternative music, which tends to put an more of an emphasis on the words. I do enjoy classical and jazz, and the melody is definately important there.
<<Besides, I kind of disagree that all songs are poetry. Some of them have really crappy lyrics, and I don't consider that poetry.>>
Not all songs are poetry, good poetry anyway. You won't find me saying, "Boy, that new Nsync song just brought me to tears. It changed my life!"

For me it depends. If the song has great lyrics, it may save it from having a dull, crappy, formulaic melody on the drum machine and programmed keyboards. But this is rare. Sometimes the songs have really dumb lyrics but I listen to it because of a guitar hook that I like. It's really great to have a song that has both great lyrics and a melody that sticks in your mind. Classic rock is like this. Sometimes the lyrics are bad but the melody and bass line is the best.
"20 20 20 24 hours ago, I wanna be sedated . . . hurry hurry hurry, before I go insane. Oh Oh Oh Oh OH Oh!. But it's a great song by the Ramones, hard to explain but it's a great song.
Or one by the Who called Won't Get Fooled Again, and anything by Pink Floyd.

Well, I guess it depends with me. If I feel like dancing, then I guess it doesn't really matter if the song has good lyrics or not - just the beat, melody, etc. But if I'm down or something or if I just want to sit in my room and listen to some good music, then yes, the lyrics have to speak to me in some way or form.

Without them, music would be pointless. It's all about the message they send. The voice is important sure...but it really doesnt matter if what you singing is crap.
But it depends in why you listen to the music, if you like to hear music to dance then you probably wont listen to Coldplay or something like that. You probably wouldnt care about what the person is talking about.

So you think that classical, jazz, swing, etc. are pointless? You do NOT need lyrics in music. Yes, the majority of pop music contains lyrics, but there are many other types of great music where no one sings. And I think that songs that have vocals don't necessarily have to have great lyrics. The sound is much more important to me. Also, what about songs that are sung in a different language? Are they meaningless to you, just because you don't know what they are saying?

That completely depends. I sometimes listen to techno, trance, etc. and the majority of these types of music are lyric-free, it's the melody that you hear, no lyrics, yet they are capable of sending a message through notes. I think that's good enough. Sometimes, in that certain, the lyrics can actually ruin a song. Other times, I like lyrics in a song, it makes the song more fun. I mostly like songs with equal amounts of music and lyrics. To me, lyrics are just a bonus.

Lyrics are important to me. Music is important, too. That's why I listen to a lot of instrumentals by bands I like. I read lyrics to a lot of songs by bands I like, and if I don't like the music, I don't listen to the song. For me, the lyrics are more important because that's the part that touches me. That's the part that reaches me. You can read your favorite lyrics and like them. But when you listen to the song, the words come alive. It makes it so much more meaningful. Some people think good lyrics are a bonus. Some think the melody is a bonus. They are all opinions, no one is right. It's a waste of time trying to prove that you are right, because there is no right and wrong.

Lyrics are an important part to me. They speak to me, they make me laugh, they make me think, they can even make me teary-eyed. When I want to be touched, moved, whatever...I listen to music with good lyrics...

"Greg was always getting net from 20 feet away, he had a tryout with the sixers, couldn't wait for saturday. Now we're never gonna see him slam, flyin' high as Kobe can, cause his life was stole OH, and now we'll never know." "He was always such a nice boy, the quiet one, with good intentions. He was down for his brother, respectful to his mother, a good guy, but good don't get attention. One kid with a promise, the brightest of the kids at school, he's not a fool. Readin' books about science and smart stuff. But... it's not enough. No! Cause smart don't make you cool, no, no, no." "He's not invisible anymore. Since he walked thru that Classroom door, he's all over primetime news." "Mary's got the same size hands as Marilyn Monroe, she put's her fingers in the imprints and dance Chinese Theatre Show. She coulda' been a movie star. Never had the chance to go that far. But... her life was stole. And now we'll never never know." As you can see, lyrics are very important to me. I like a song that speaks to me. That has some sort of importance. Not something like: "You and me baby aint nothin' but mamal so let's do it like they do on the Discovery Channel." ^That's just ignorance. I do not see the point of a song if it doesn't have some meaning to it. Like Kelly Rowland, Michelle Branch, Christiana Aguilera... unless I'm dancing. Then pretty much all that matter's is the beat of the song. My best, Stephanie

It depends. Most of the time, the lyrics are the most important thing in the song to me. While I enjoy a good melody, I really look for deep and meaningful lyrics in a song. There's been more times than I can count that I've read the lyrics of a band or artist's CD off a website, bought the CD without hearing anything, and ending up loving the CD. Also, as a songwriter/singer/musician myself, I like to look to other song's lyrics for inspiration. However...if I'm dancing I couldn't care less about the lyrics. I just want something to get down to.

Exactly! It depends...but therefore u cant compare like artists or bands who are better at lyrics and those who are better at making good music.

No. Well, yes, and no.
I like the music that sounds good to me. This could either be something with thoughtful lyrics or fun ones. Good ones or mediocre ones.
Lots of words or very little to none at all.
Okay. I'm not sure if this made sense. Meh.

I don't think lyrics are all that important, If the song has awsome instramental parts in it then I might not even listen to the lyrics. I have a song that is one of my favorites, and I don't even know who is singing it or what they are saying but the whole feel of the song is nice so I like it. There might be a song were I only like one little guitar riff but that will make me like the whole song. (though I probably won't listen to it as much as another song where I like the whole thing) Don't get me wrong though I think meaningful lyrics are a great added bonus!! and can be almost just as improtant, but the musical talent is really important too, If it's computer generated music with some lyrics added then I Probably won't like it.

But a song is not a song if it doesnt have good lyrics that make sense...
That does go for cheesy pop love songs too!
Instrumentals are not songs are they?!

I think the music is more important. I agree with a line from Semi-Charmed Life (by Third Eye Blind) - "And the right four chords can make me cry." I listen to trance songs too, and the melody is sometimes what moves me more than lyrics in a song. But lyrics, if they fit, can make it better.
