Do you find lyrics important in music? Personally, I do. I mean, the more powerful and meaningful the message is, the better the song. What are your views?

I only like a song if the lyrics speak to me and reach out to me. The melody isn't nearly as important.

Lyrics are way more important to me than the song itself. If it has crappy lyrics, I won't like the song. I think I read my lyric books more than I listen to the song.

The lyrics are the *most* important to me. If a song speaks to me, then I like it. If it has nothing at all relating to my life, I say screw it. I want something that I can relate to.

I agree with everyone. If a song relates to me or makes me laugh, then I like it. Although, classical music is good, and there aren't any words to that!

Yes! The lyrics are super important! But it also has to have a good melody/rhythm to it. ;D

The lyrics are very important to me. Some songs that come off as negative, are really uplifting and positive. (ex. Love is Blind) Most people, however, don't really listen to the lyrics and instead use the songs rythm to determine whether it's positive or negative.

Same Here. If the song is stupid,I wont like it as long. Lyrics are somewhat important, but the actual music has to be good too. The melody, harmony, and beat are what makes something a song. The main reason I listen to music is because of the sound. Besides, a lot of different types of music don't even use vocalists and therefore don't have lyrics. But that doesn't mean the the music isn't awesome. For those of you who say that the lyrics are the main thing that matters, do you not think that bands like Glenn Miller Orchestra are talented simply because they don't have words in their songs? I think that music is one thing, and lyrics are another. You can mix the two, but the music has to be there first. I don't really care if the song "speaks to me" or any of that crap. It's nice if it does that, but it's just an added bonus.

Then why not just read poetry?

^^^^^^ All of songs ARE poetry. Just put music and rythim to it and its a song.

Me too. I used to just listen to any song and not pay attetion to the words,or anything, but now I pay alot of attention towards the lyrics, but more to the sound. But the lyrics, too, are important.

Yes, but if all she cares about is the words, then what's the point of even listening to music? You can just read poetry instead. Besides, I kind of disagree that all songs are poetry. Some of them have really crappy lyrics, and I don't consider that poetry.

[glow=blue,2,300]It depends. If I'm just mellowing out then yes the lyrical content is important. But if I just want to get up and dance and just forget about things for awhile then no lyrics are not important.[/glow]

Not necessarily. Voice is another instrument to me; if I like the voice, then I might not pay attention to the lyrics, and just focus on how nice it sounds. But if their voice is terrible, then I'm probably going to concentrate more on the lyrics to try and find more faults with it.
