Child abuse, in my opnion, is one of the most serious crimes out there. Why should anyone, even if it's a parent, be allowed to hit a child so hard it leaves injuries or even leads to death?
I've heard of a father who hit his daughter with an iron bar across the back. In court, he was not convicted, and his action was considered 'discipline.' Another case I'd heard of was a little girl, about 23 months old, who was seriously abused by her aunts. There had been bruises, cigarette burns on her body, and sexual abuse was evident. She died of brain damage, but it was reported that her other injuries had been so extreme that they would have caused her death also.
Abuse of any kind leaves behind damage. Physical wounds may heal, but emotional wounds won't. We may not be able to stop it, but we can help prevent it. What are your thoughts on child abuse?

^^ That's awful! I also heard of a girl of about 7 who was kept in a cage, her parents didn't feed her or anything, they just left her there. Her 11-year old brother went to get help and fortunately they took those kids away there. I can't imagine how anyone can even come up with all that stuff. I mean, what are you thinking when you do something like that to your own child?? ~*Esther*~

Ugh, I can't belive parents would do something as terrible as abusing their children! That stuff in the above posts are just SICK and wrong! My best friend was abused by her dad (she probably still is ) but they moved out of state. Her sister contacted the Child Abuse agency, and they really didn't take much notice in it at all. *sighs* I'm worried about her.

Child abuse, whether it be physical, emotional or sexual, is horrible and disgusting. We need tougher legislation for child abusers. Longer prison sentences and more mandatory therapy and treatment options are what's needed. Also, I think that children who are abused should be taken far away from those who abuse them. It really disgusts me that in some cases, children are abused, and as long as the parent promises to get therapy, they can keep their child. That is very wrong.

I feel like Im gonna like throw up..(sorry but I had to share that..lol))But seriuosly, why do they need to do it...Its not discipline. But ya'know, alot of ppl could have drinking problems and do it,cuz thats what Ive always heard, like the 'parent' was drunk and hit their child blah blah blah.....But thats not all thats bad,the other thing is when like babysitters juz start hitting the kids and stuff...and I dont see why that guy wasnt convicted he did something wrong,gosh....

How could you say that a drunk parent abusing a child is not all thats bad? It's terrible. That person is still the parent of the child, drunk or not. It's still inexcusable. If the parent has a drinking problem then (s)he is not fit to be a parent. If the person who is supposed to protect the child is the one who harms him, who is the child to turn to? Child abuse is one of the lowest forms of relieving frustration (it comes right next to cruelty to animals). I know people who beat their children for not getting good grades. These kids come to school with bruises on their bodies. How is this right??

I called one of my friends after I moved a few years ago and one of our friends hung himself b/c his mom was gonna kick him down the stairs for getting bad grades on his report card. Physical punishment shouldnt be allowed. Where are they gonna draw the line between abuse and punishment. If they were to do that to another child, they would get in trouble. Physical punishment doesnt do anything but give the child ideas that physical domination is okay.

I agree that child abuse is a horrible thing, but some people have difficulty deciphering between abuse and discipline. It is not okay to beat your kid or whip him with a belt. However, I see nothing wrong with spanking your kid every once in a while for being bad. If a kid is being a real brat, then I think it's fine if the parents want to give him a smack on the butt. Yeah, it'll hurt for a couple seconds, and then the "pain" will be gone. And maybe the kid will associate bad behavior with being spanked. Sure, sometimes there are better methods of disciplining your child, especially when they are older. But a spanking will often get the job done better. A two-year-old is going to remember that. They may not remember a time-out, and they certainly won't remember a parent speech. I mean, you really can't reason very well with most little kids. And I think that spanking a kid is 10000 times better than doing something incredibly stupid like bribing the kid with candy or toys.

I think that spanking has a limited place in dealing with small children. Specifically, with toddlers who are about to do something that could cause them immidiate physical harm. A kid should associate pain (on the order of getting the offending hand slapped) with reaching towards the stove or electric socket.
