It is my opinion that it is not guns that cause violence, it is the people who use them wrongly that cause the violence. It really infuriates me when people complain about how much violence guns cause and whatnot. When gun control and such are implemented it is not the guilty who are punished, it is the innocent law-abiding gun owners. How do you feel about this subject??

It's difficult to say where I stand on this issue. Guns don't directly cause violence. They can't jump out of their case and shoot someone on their own. But they do make it a hell of a lot easier for someone to hurt or kill another person. However, we can't take away the 2nd amendment, even though some people abuse it. The only thing that we can do is enforce the laws that we have, while still maintaing the right to own a gun. I am in favor of gun control in some aspects. I think that background checks should be done more carefully. I think that gun locks are good if there are children in the house. Yes, it is the parents' responsibilty to teach the kids to stay away from the gun, but there are a lot bad parents. The results of bad parenting could be very dangerous in that case, and I don't think we should take the risk.

The guns don't directly cause violence, but it bridges the gap between the person and the crime. People might not go to a whole lot of trouble to commit a crime if the guns weren't so easy to get. There was some poll taken of teenagers and the majority said they could get a gun if they wanted to.
It's usually the parents' fault for keeping the guns in stupid places. They may be law-abiding, but just because they went through a strict process to get that gun doesn't necessarily mean they have the common sense to put it safely away and out of the reach of children.

Guns can do alot but its the people who make them do alot.
if you have a gun for protection or hunting then yea thats alright but then you have the physcos who go on shoot outs or start school shootings and then the guns do cause violence, to other people.

^^But why should innocent law abiding gun owners have to suffer consequences for the minority of wackos?? Shall not be infringed, means just that.

^^ Agreed. Criminals are criminals because they don't follow the law. The law only hinders the law abiding. I don't see why so many people just don't get that.

I think it's the people that kill, not the guns. As someone said before, they don't just jumo out of their cases and shoot people. Someone has to actually pick it up and make that decision on their own.

I'm kind of divided on that one. It's true that people make their own concious (sp?) decision, but there would probably be less deaths if guns didn't exist. Then again, people would probably still scalp each other and I don't even want to THINK about that !

I am divided on this subject. No, guns can't jump out and shoot everyone by themselves, but it makes it a lot easier for bad people to harm others. I think they should make it more difficult to get a gun, instead of just being able to walk in a store and buy one. And I think that if the person who bought it has any children, they should put the gun somewhere out of reach...

Where exactly can you just walk into a store and buy a gun? Before a person can purchase a weapon such as that, they have to get a permit and have a background check done. Of course, people who have good backgrounds but intend to cause harm to other people can still buy guns, but there's really no way to prevent it. Anyway, if someone is sick enough to purposely kill a human being, they'll do it regardless of whether they have a gun.

No, the best thing would be for the parents to teach their kids that guns are dangerous and should not be touched. Explaining the dangers of guns will actually give the kids a reason not to go near it. Of course, this is not something that the government can legislate.

"They can't jump out of their case and shoot someone on their own. But they do make it a hell of a lot easier for someone to hurt or kill another person." Nicely said, Cass. I definitely agree. There are plenty of families who have guns in the house, but no one's hurt or killed by these guns because the parents take care to keep it out of the reach of their children/stupid teenagers (;D), and educate their families about the dangers of the gun. If people were smart and dealt with the gun properly, I don't think half as many people would be hurt or killed. Love, ~The Kitten~

Well lets look at what you have a gun for: to defend yourself, right? Well the minute you use that gun as a form of defence, then you are causing some form of violence. Whether the violence is really violence, or whether it is to protect yourself, either way you are shooting the gun... you are hurting someone, you are causing violence.
Of course if you have a gun then your intent may not be to go out and cause violence, but keeping a gun shows that you will not be afraid to do so if the right occasion comes.

lilmissstrawberry: You're from the UK, right? I seem to remember learning that all handguns have been banned there since 1998. I was just curious to know your feelings on this particular issue.

It's not the gun that shoots on it's own, that's true... But like a lot of people have said, it does make it a lot easier. When someone is in a bad mood (and not in his right mind), it sure does make it a lot easier to kill someone with a gun lying around the house...
