I don't like them. I think they only jugde women and girls on the way they look. They make young girls think they have to look good in a bathing suit to be consitered pretty. And you don't see stuff like that for men. There's no Mr.America. What do you think?

<<They make young girls think they have to look good in a bathing suit to be consitered pretty.>> <br>The last pageant I saw included the bathing suit contest, but the scores weren't determined by how great their figures were, but on their poise and confidence. Also, the recent Miss World pageant did not feature a bathing suit contest, but only had the contestants introduce themselves on a beach in their swimsuits. *They could jugde their poise and confidence in other clothes. Yes but they were at one point wearing bathing suits. Once again they could have just introduced themselves in noraml clothes. Why do they need to take off their clothes?* <<And you don't see stuff like that for men. There's no Mr.America.>> Actually, where I live, there was a behind-the-scenes TV show on male beauty pageants. There are male beauty pageants, it wouldn't be fair to say there was none. *Maybe they do where you live but I've never heard of them where I live. And why haven't I seen any on TV? There just doen't seem to be that many of them.

I think they did that too see how confident they would be up on the stage in front of hundreds of people AND people watching tv in a bathing suit. Not too see what they look like in a bathing suit but to see if they would be self concisous (sp?) or shy, or embarrassed or proud of thier body. Thats what i think.

I know fat girls who are proud of their bodies, and would easily go out in front of people in a bathingsuit. How come people like them never win beauty pagents?
And the name *beauty* pagents should be enough to tell you it's all about looks.

This statement bothers me, because it seems like you are saying that overweight girls cannot be beautiful. And also, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So I think that having a contest based on beauty is stupid. It's completely subjective.

I think most girls, large or small, aren't comfortable enough with their bodies to parade themselves on stage. I can't really answer the question on why there are no overweight girls, because I'm sure there are some who are confident enough to do that. It's sad, because it's supposed to be about their minds, which is a part of it. And, actually, a lot of those girls aren't all that pretty. Anyone can look half-diecent when they have makeup artists working on them for hours. <br> The swimsuit portion supposedly is to show how physically fit that girl is, and how well she takes care of her body. They're looking for well-rounded people who are not only intellegent, but help out in the community and present themselves well. Sure, it's a bit shallow, since a great deal of the program is spent on the clothing, but it's not that bad, in all honesty.

That's not how I meant it to sound. They can be beautiful.

There are many fat girls who take care of their bodies and are in great shape, so why aren't they ever in beauty pagents?

I agree with most posts above. I think that being judged plainly on your looks is completely wrong, so thats why I choose not to watch such shows. If you want to support them, thats your right and your choice so go for it(no sarcasm)! I just would rather not be a supporter of this kind of predjudice.

Beauty pageants are all about looks, as I see it. Like Naru said, the word "beauty" pretty much implies it. Think about it - these women spend how much time fixing their hair, and finding the "perfect" dress and bathing suit, doing their makeup just right, blah blah blah. If that doesn't tell you something, I don't know what will. About them claiming that the bathing suits are to see how physically fit you are, that proves right there that it's all about looks. Shouldn't it be more about inner beauty and intelligence? What does showing off your body have to do with either of those things? I would personally love to see women of all shapes and sizes in it together, but of all the years I've seen it, it's always been very tall, very thin women. Ugh. This is pretty much the reason why I don't watch those things. They make it out to be like these women don't have flaws, and that if they're slightly less than perfect, they don't stand a chance. But that's just how I view it. I'll stick to quality television, thank you.

I actually saw a beauty pageant a few months ago, I don't remember when...but I remember thinking that I loved how the contestants weren't stereotypical big-busted blondes. I think the winner was this beautiful African-American woman with dark chocolate skin and eyes...she was sooo pretty. I know the fact that the pageants are all about looks is, obviously, a bad thing, but isn't it good that the judges realize people who break the mold are SO much prettier than the average pretty girl? Most of the things I wanted to say have already been said, but I'll say them anyways, just in case something new pops up.
Personally, I don't like beauty pagents. They have gotten better and let the contestants show more personality, but they still judge on looks. For instance, overweight girls can be as beautiful as skinny girls, but do you ever see them in a beauty pagent? I have never even seen a regular sized girl in the pagents now that I think about it!
I'm not going to put down people who watch them, it's your business. Sometimes I just watch the beginning to see if they have a regular/overweight sized girl in the pagent, but it never fails, I don't, so I turn the channel. They DO judge on looks, and if they wanted to change their image, they would name it a "personality pagent" or something like that.
Bottom line: It's wrong to judge someone on their looks.

Many of you are absolutely correct. In my opinion, beauty pageants are terrible. It is very wrong to base a contest on how "beautiful" a person may be. Why would such an idea enter one’s mind? It is barbaric in certain senses, as ridiculous as that may sound. But competing over something that someone just happened to be born with (by coincidence, I may add) and others have not is simply inappropriate. Sure, those who are "lucky" enough to enter such contests are gaining a bit more self confidence (that many most likely already had enough of), but those who are "not eligible" to enter are left or brought down to even a lower confidence level than they were at before. It is the Few against the Many, in a sense, and the majority of people are getting hurt. It is a biased system leaning towards those who are pleasant-looking rather than guaranteed to be pleasantly-kind. But, as NaruNarusegawa said above, I suppose that is why they call them "beauty pageants". Our world today is filled with this sort of prejudiced trash: judging by looks. How terribly shallow! How on earth did society begin to believe that people who were so-called good-looking were superior to those who were not? Who defined the line between beauty and non? I would just be fascinated to know how and when we as people began to think in such a way. But I am rambling. However, I would like to bring forth a thought I had on the “fat (oh, how I hate to use the word) is not beautiful” thoughts that the media seems to project forth. I was thinking this over one day: "If some people in this world believe that overweight people are not beautiful, there must be some that believe thinner people are not beautiful as well." This is why I despise these sorts of contests based predominantly on looks – it is just another step by the media to brainwash people into thinking their own certain way. Beauty can be seen any way, and it sickens me to no end when people judge other at first sight, deciding their worth in one glance. Nonetheless, my overall point remains, and it is my belief that contests are essentially based outer appearance alone are shallow and insensitive. Who are they to judge who is beautiful and who is not? As Cassiopeia has already stated, isn't "beauty in the eye of the beholder"? Obviously, the organizers of this contest do not seem to take this into consideration .

I hate beauty pageants. Many of you have said this already, I think many overweight people are beautiful, and I have Never seen an overweight person in a beauty pageant. I've never seen an ugly girl in one either. I don't see how their looks would show if they are beautiful ot not. Sure they may be pretty, but there are a lot of pretty people were are ugly in the inside. And there are a lot of ugly people, or overweight, or whatever who are way more beautiful in the inside. I don't get the purpose of beauty pageants either.
