I was watching Primetime Thursday last night and they had this model on there(can't remember her name) but anyway she used to purge and starve herself just to fit into a size 2 and her model figure. She finally realized she was hurting her body and she change. She gained 30 pounds and now she is 5'10,155lbs and size 12. But now she is a "Plus size "model.
I think it is sick how the media is promoting this stick thin figure. Size 12 is in no way "plus size" I would consider it medium. What about all these young girls that they are making them think if they aren't under size 6 they aren't beautiful. It is really sad. I am a size 3 and 5 but it's not because I purge or I starve myself. I eat. But some of these girls would do those things just to be like the models. It makes me sick. This model looked very healthy too. She didn't look like she could fall out at any moment from lack of eating so what do you think?

I don't think a size 12 is plus at all. I also think that they should have modles from different shapes and sizes, and not categorize them into regualr, and plus. Cause I think the plus models are about the size of more people than the 95 pound other models. "Plus size" models can look just as good modeling clothes as anyone else can. And to me they look healthier.

Well, from that model's measurements, I think she's probably about the same size as me (5'9, 160 lbs, size 12). I certainly don't consider myself plus-size. I'm actually on the thin side. Also, the average American woman wears a size 14 and is only 5'4". So saying that a size 12 is plus-size, especially on a very tall woman, is very untrue. Unfortunately, this is the case with most magazines and catalogues. The average plus-size model is a size 10-12. Have you ever seen a Lane Bryant catalogue? Those women are *thin*. And the smallest size Lane Bryant makes is a 14, and it's a lot larger than a regular misses 14, so it makes me wonder if they have special clothes for the models. It's just so ironic that these women are considered plus-size, when they are really smaller than the average woman. And they're a lot nicer to look at than those waif-like size 2 models. I'm not saying that naturally thin people are gross or anything, but those women obviously starve themselves, and they look really awful.

Good grief. Size 12 is a plus size? Where have I been? I'm 5'5", 170 lbs, and wear a size 14 to 16... Granted, I am trying to lost weight, so far I've lost about 10 lbs. ;D, but not because of the media or others' perceptions of me (no one [except for one] on my mother's side of the family has lived past 50 due to heart disease and I don't like those numbers, nor do I want to become one).
My thinking is, if you are happy with yourself, you are healthy, and you think you look good, screw what everyone else thinks. But if it is a detriment to your health, be it too under/overweight, then you should take care of the problem.

woah....what? i'm a size 2, and i do NOT starve myself. i'm sorry if i look like it, but i am naturally small hipped and i have a small frame. i eat just like anybody else eats, and i workout regularly. please do not assume, that just because some girls starve themselves to fit into a certain image, that not everybody does.

diva, usually one can tell if someone is naturally thin or not. And the majority of those models are not meant to be that thin... especially if they're around 5'9" or taller.

I hate the fact that thin is beautiful, and I don't know if that stereotype will ever go away. I'm 5'5", a size 14/16 and about 185 pounds, give or take. No one has ever really said I'm fat, and although I do know I'm probably not at my healthiest weight, I'm pretty content with my body, and (dare I say it?) happy with it. The media has become such a part of our lives by saying thin is beautiful, that my size five friends insist they're obese. <<Have you ever seen a Lane Bryant catalogue? Those women are *thin*.>> I know! They look to be about a size eight. It's ridiculous. <<My thinking is, if you are happy with yourself, you are healthy, and you think you look good, screw what everyone else thinks.>> Exactly. Curvy girls can be very sexy, it's all in your confidence and how well you can carry yourself with your head held high.

Um, I never said that everyone who is a size 2 starves themselves. I know plenty of people who are naturally tiny. There's nothing wrong with that. But a model who is 6'0" tall and wears a size 2 is definitely not healthy. And a lot of those models do starve themselves. Ribs don't naturally stick out and stomachs don't naturally cave in like that. I think that the waif-look is really ugly.

I have to agree with you there. You know,in the old days, being a big women meant you were rich, because you ate well. (Something like that) But now people are dieting and try all these programs, just to be thin. I mean,I know you want to look good, and that's fine. But starving yourself just to fit into a size 2 is ridiculous. I could understand if you were overweight to where your unhealthy, then you should excersize and eat well. But just doing it just to be 'that size like that girl on tv' is just stupid in my opinion. I do have to admit though, that I wouldn't mind dieting and excersizing more to become fit. But starving myself is just way off from what I want to do in the first place. (If anyone gets that)

EVERYONE should eat healthy and exercise. A thin person who sits on their ass watching TV all day and stuffs their face with junk food is no better than a fat person who does the same thing.

i think it's tragic that america has the highest rates of obesity, yet our standard for what is beautiful is unhealthy and anorexic thin.
oh the irony.

But I was leaning more to the side for someone who was overweight. That's all I was saying, but yes, everyone *should* excersize and eat well. Also,I went to the mall today and in the Jr. (I really hate being seen around preppy places.... ..but oh well) almost all their jeans were either a size 1,2 or a 6....(Which I hate since I usually wear an 11 or a 13...*sigh* sorry I can't be skinny) And as I told my mom 'these are anerexic clothes!! (lol....But I know alot of people who are skinny are not always anerexic...... ;D)

i was in health class about a year ago and the girls in there were like "OMG! can you believe that the national avgerage for a girls jeans is 14?!" and the guys thought that they were over reacting (which they were). i totally think it's sad that the media is pressuring young girls to look like a twig, just to think that they are pretty.

^^^ Yeah. Guys don't even like girls who starve themselves. I mean, all the guys I've talked to have said that those really tall and skinny models are ugly. So why do girls want to look like that? I mean, they obviously want to be attractive, so why would they try to acheive an image that isn't attractive to most people?

^^^^^^ Because the media makes it look like that all guys want is a very thin, blonde (sometimes) women. It's the media's fault (most of the time) And I could garentee ya,that most girls think guys that put them down or something don't like them and they think it is because of their weight!
I mean just the other day I was watching Riki Lake and this guy goes (about his girlfriend) "At first when we met she was cool, but then she started gaining weight and so I'm not atrracted to her anymore" OH PLEASE GET A LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!
