<<to make the point that we were better than those godless Communists, or something>>
Or something...
Ive posted this a few times now, but this is what Eisenhower said when he signed the act of Congress that added the phrase "under God" to the Pledge. "In this way we are reaffirming the transcendence of religious faith in America's heritage and future; in this way we shall constantly strengthen those spiritual weapons which forever will be our country's most powerful resource in peace and war."
It does not violate the First Amendment, and there is no reason to get rid of it.

OK sorry I didn't get my facts straight, That seems to be what they believed when they added the "under god" part into the pledge In the fifties. You seemed to miss my point which was, The "under god " part does not violate any amendment and I don't think it should be taken out.

The USA was founded on the precepts of Christianity, or at least in the Spirit of Jesus. The Founding Fathers had a strong beleif in God and in many cases wanted the Bible to be part of the curriculum in schools.
Other people do not beleive in God or they beleive in another diety and that's fine. But the fact that this nation celebrates Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving reflects the inescapable fact that the religion of choice in America is Christianity. So whether others are offended is irrelevant. Multiculturalism is ruining this country to the point where you can't say or do something without some self-appointed organization sticking some supeona in your face that you can't have that manger scene on your lawn and you can't say God in schools, and you can't bring a Bible to school.
Now immigrants are more than welcome to this country to live, work and play, and build their dreams. But our country is Under God and a red, white and blue flag. So not only can you come as you are, you can leave too.
