Last night I decied to become a vegetarian. So..today's my first day. It was hard to get my parents to let me but, I said atleast let me try it for a week...hopefully after they see that I can still be healthy and have good meals they'll understand. Anywhoo, I've decided to go for no meat besides fish...and I still have dairy. After looking at my diet, I realized that I dont eat that much meat anyway...so it shouldnt be too hard. GO VEGIES!! ;D

After being a vegetarian for 2 years, I went vegan today. I knew when I went vegetarian, I wanted to be a vegan, but I loved ice cream, milk, cheese, etc. too much, so I gradually reduced it and now it is out of my system and I won't miss it. Thank God for soy lattes.

Congrats on convincing your parents, Nikki, it took me forever to convince mine to let me be vegetarian. I had to do 3 hours of research and come up with recipes and charts and menus...arrgh. But, hey, it was worth it, cuz for once in my life I won with them. And wow HeavensAngel...I really admire your dedication. I don't think I could ever be vegan, but I think it's completely awesome the sacrifice and time you put into being vegan...good job!

I am a vegetarian. My friend Kim (HeavensAngel) and I went vegetarian together about 2 years ago. However, I have not (or probably couldn't) go vegan like her, however, I have a tremendous respect for her doing it.

Protein doesn't only come from meat...there's lots of other places you can get protein! There's beans, eggs, cheese, protein supplements, dairy, soy, and many more options I just can't think of right now. Of course, dairy, cheese, and eggs aren't an option if you become vegan. However, it is very important that you get protein - vegetarianism requires research, because without enough protein you could acquire a protein disorder (I had one for a while...I was constantly tired...not fun). You also have to have a way to fufill the iron requirement you previously got from meat...you could take an iron supplement, or eat extra veggies. Also, multivitamins are a good idea just to be on the safe side. Unless you heard that from a reliable scientific source, I doubt it's true. If anything, vegetarians would probably live longer lives because of the healthy eating. Well, being a vegetarian is a personal choice for everyone, and everyone's reasons are different. I did it because I'm big on animal rights, and I can't stand the thought of eating animals. However, now that I've been a "veggie" for almost 2 years, I'm really enjoying the health benefits. But...here's some pros and cons to consider. Positive Stuff~ It's a *very* healthy way of eating. You don't get the saturated fats of meat, and you get lots of fruits and veggies. ~ You don't have the risk of getting any diseases that come with meat. ~ You're not eating something that once was alive and walked around and possibly had a name. ~ Vegetables are cheaper than meat if you're eating @ home, salads are cheaper than steaks if you're eating out. Negative Aspects~ You have to deal with closeminded people who just refuse to accept different ideas, vegetarianism being one of them. ~ Sometimes if you're going to an event, they won't have a vegetarian option, in which case you must fill up on salad and side dishes. Good luck if either of you decide to go vegetarian! And you can always PM me or come back here if you want more info or tips.

You should try to get 50-63 grams of protein. Dairy products, grains, beans and soy are excellent sources of protein. There are also protein supplements.
What I try to do is caculate all the protein I take in during the day, and if I get 35-40 or less grams, I will take some protein supplement. Protein supplement isn't too cheap, so that's why I will only use it when I need it. However, if you go vegetarian, not vegan, it will be a lot easier to get your needed protein.

I want to go vegetarian right away but my parents won't let me till I'm 18 at least. They think I need proper nourishment, and they're probably right. However, I keep away from all red meats. I pile up on salads and veggies mostly and restrict myself to chicken, turkey and seafood. I will never become a vegan though. For one, I could develop a deficiency. Plus I don't see the reason behind being vegan. What's wrong with milk and dairy produce?
