Yay! England beats Argentina 1-0! I stayed up until 11:30pm to watch it. Funny that...David Beckham scored the only goal.
Today's games: Mexico VS. Ecuador Costa Rica VS. Turkey Japan VS. Russia (Go, Junichi Inamoto)
Noticed my icon yet? My entire LiveJournal is themed around the FIFA World Cup 2002. Sure, I'll have to change it when it's over, but it looks good.

I have to go with football as the great American game, but I must admit, compared to soccer, the action in football is all of about four minutes with 3 and half hours of walking around on the field and another hour for commercials. I watched the game between Argentina and England and the action was continuous. Good stuff!

I was cheering South Korea...did you know that their game against USA was played in the stadium right next to where I used to live? Ahn Jung Hwan's golden goal...he'll be gracing the covers of Korean newspapers this morning.
Turkey beats Japan...a sad bye-bye to Junichi Inamoto, Shinji Ono and Hidetoshi Nakata. They were my favorite players in the tournament, and it'll be unlikely to see them in action for awhile. They substitued Inamoto in the second half...it's also bye-bye to Phillippe Troussier, the French-born Japanese coach.
Next games are between England and Brazil (Tight match, gotta go with the old favorites, Brazil) and USA and Germany (Germany hands down!).
A few days ago, I sent an email to a guy who had written a rather insulting article in some online newspaper. I found it degrading, particularly to my country, and felt that the reader was forced to believe that Korea was a petty and desperate country.
It stems back to Ohno's medal at Salt Lake City, where a South Korean skater was disqualified after supposedly not allowing Ohno to skate through. This caused immense controversy in South Korea. So when Ahn Jung Hwan, after scoring the equalizer against the Yankees in the soccer match, ran to the corner of the pitch, and performed, alongside his teammates, a little skating routine. They face a ban from international soccer for the next few years because of what some call a "bad display of non-sportsmanship."
I wrote to him: In the article, the writer constantly made remarks that would allow a clueless reader to assume that South Korea is a bitter, petty nation. No, that isn't what we are. We stand up for ourselves without violence or nuking if we feel we were unfairly justified. Which happened to be the case when Ohno was awarded the gold medal over a Korean skater at Salt Lake City. Ahn Jung Hwan, the player that lead the mock skating routine, was simply proving his dedication to Korea's rights, which I'd like to see America acknowledge. It's a shame that more of America does not take pride in the sports they are supposedly skilled at, or manage to win medals in by faking dramatic Hollywood sequences. Instead of mocking our national pride, practise it. Then maybe then the rest of the world could see America as great as Americans do.
I took a couple swipes. I was pissed off. That's about half the email. The other half I was too lazy to copy/paste.
He replied: Dear Seonah, thanks for your note, it proves my thesis perfectly. Best, JVL.
Hmm.

Check this out:
ROME (Reuters) - Italian soccer club Perugia has cut its ties with South Korea's Ahn Jung-hwan after he scored the goal which knocked Italy out of the World Cup, Perugia's chairman has been quoted as saying.
"That gentleman will never set foot in Perugia again," Luciano Gaucci told sports' daily La Gazzetta dello Sport.
Italy has reacted with fury to Tuesday's shock 2-1 defeat to South Korea, accusing the referee and soccer's ruling body FIFA of fixing the match.
Ahn, who missed a penalty earlier in the match, was hailed as a national hero when he headed home the golden goal winner in the 116th minute.
But his goal was viewed in a different light at Perugia in central Italy, where he has been viewed as an under-achiever during his stay at the club.
"He was a phenomenon only when he played against Italy. I am a nationalist and I regard such behaviour not only as an affront to Italian pride but also an offence to a country which two years ago opened its doors to him," Gaucci was quoted as saying.
"I have no intention of paying a salary to someone who has ruined Italian soccer."
Ahn joined Perugia on loan from the South Korean team Pusan I.cons in the summer of 2000. He scored five goals in 29 appearances.
A Perugia spokesman said on Wednesday the club had virtually decided to release Ahn even before the World Cup tie.

These people have no sportsmanship.

^^ That's just sad. I guess Ahn should be glad to have been released, in the interest of his own safety

I feel like a loser making these big posts and looking like an obsessed fan. Ah, well, forgive me.
I guess Ahn should be glad to have been released, in the interest of his own safety. Yeah, good point. Italians were hurling water bottles and slurring insults at a small group of South Korean supporters. Italian media described the Ecudorian referee that made some controversial calls as "chubby," "bug-eyed" and "immature."
They're not very good at accepting defeat, hmm?

I think it's about time we had some "mediocre" teams in the final (forget Brazil here for a moment). All week I've been reading about how the flare is gone now that Italy, Argentina, France, Spain etc. are gone, but I think it's awesome. I mean, S. Korea beat Italy and Spain to get where they are (despite some terrible calls) but they got there, didn't they? Isn't some credit due? Had the bad calls been against S. Korea, the world would be happy because Italy is ALWAYS in the final. But now that the bad calls are against Italy suddenly the world is angry. What happened happened, even if S. Korea didn't deserve to make it to the semi's, their other games weren't flukes. Just as long as Brazil does NOT win the final come June 30th, I'm as happy as a clam

On a couple other message boards discussing the World Cup, I was getting sick of justifying myself. But I agree with you precisely.
I don't want Brazil to win, either.
Korea lost last night. I stayed up until about 2am to watch the game. I was near tears when the final whistle blew. Anyway...Go, Dae Han Min Guk!
I refuse to change my icon until some country, beside Brazil, take home the cup.

Alright, there is a little pre-game-traumatic-stress kicking in here. See, the game starts at 5:30am my time, and I have to work at 6am. Is that not terrible?! And see, I want to watch the game, but I don't want to watch it recorded when I get off work because the ENTIRE fricken universe will know the score and I won't *sob*.

As an Italian, I am ashamed of the behaviour of Perugia, where Ahn played. Nothing more to say.
But the match was really, really so fake. The referee was really favourable to South Korea. If you care I can explain all the reasons why.
I guess the FIFA wanted Italy out. 4 good goals cancelled during the matches from the referees (i don't know any technical football talk in english, so excuse my ignorance).
I have nothing aginst South Korea winning. I would have liked better though, if they had won because they played better than italians. With the referee partial to them, it is difficult to see if they won because they are really BETTER than us.
