Yeah, No Doubt used to be really ska...it was great. You don't hear much of it @ all in their new stuff.
Other than the old No Doubt, I don't listen to much ska, so I have nothing more meaningful to contribute.

Hey...I wasn't exactly sure where to post this (make it a separate thread or stick it here), but this seems as good a place as any. For those who know of them, Save Ferris broke up. Yes, it's sad but true. A band that managed to be part of two dying commodities in music: good girl bands and ska (well...at least they used to be at one point). But the more distressing news in all of this is that it seems that Mo's increasing ego and drive for rock stardom may have played a role in their break up. Of course, this is just me speculating but...I guess you can draw your own opinions from the letter Brian wrote to the Save Ferris message board. "The past two months have been filled with nothing but speculation and rumors. I for one am tired of hearing all of this so I have decided to explain whats going on. In August, after several stressful months of financial whoas, losing a manager, inter- band termoil, and general bad feelings the band members had a meetimg to try and figure out exactly where the band should and would be heading in the future. At this point the majority of the band decided that they wanted to continue on with the band in away that would allow them to still play shows and put out a cd but would work on a schedule that would allow them to work jobs and have time for other porjects too. One band member was not into the idea and only wanted to strive to be a full time rock star. Eventually strange things began to occur like shows being booked without any of the other band memebers being asked about them. One person in the band was making bussiness decisions that worked in their favor and not letting other people in the band no what was really going on. After awhile it became apparent that things were not working well in the band so a last meeting was held. At this meeting it was agreed upon by ALL the band members that they would play the last few shows booked. pay off any outstanding debts, split what was left (which there wasn't anything of) and go on with their lives. So the shows were played over the next month and a half. The band acted like things were okay. We decided not to make a big annoucement so that we wouldn't cause a lot of drama. I see now that that was a mistake. We should have had a big going away show for all the fans. But none the less we carried on like things were all right. I want to say I'm sorry to all the fans out there who never got a chance to see us. I want to say I'm sorry to all the fnas who felt hurt by our sudden breakup. maybe one day we can play that big show for you ....... That leads me to what has been happening now. For the most part me and the others were being deceived by this one person and their management team. They have planned all along to try and sell you the fans a story that we have quit the band and that they are continuing on with the band. In truth they have been planning on pushing us out and trying to use the band name for their own profit. This is all after they had agreed to break up the band too. As you can see this is totally wrong. It's not fair to us the people who helped create this band. It's not fair to you the fans who want to see the REAL band. And it's totally illegal what they are trying to do. It's unfortunate that things have gotten to this point. When me and Eric and Bill started this group seven years ago I never would have dreamed we would be having to deal with people like this. that we would have to talk to other band members only through their lawyers. It seems to me that after spending so much of your life together that people would be decent enough to talk to you face to face. None the less, the boys and myself are not afraid to stand up to these people and fight for what is ours. To protect the band and all that it represented for us and for you. It's awful that it has come to this, but we won't be pushed around or bullied by people who feel that they should be able to do whatever they want. No matter what kind of tactics and ploys they try to use on us, we will NEVER GIVE UP OUR RIGHTS. I do hope that one day soon things can be better for all of us. I would truly love to play that last show for you all. But if Save Ferris is to ever play again it will be as it should be only with the people who dreamed it up and helped make it the great band that it was. I thank you sincerely for reading this, For myself and the boys, Brian Mashburn"

Colimbine, here is the answer to your question"
Ska: Sk(put upside down 'e' here) n
Ska is dance music, a mix of reggae, punk and jazz. Ska actually began in the 1960s in Jamaica as dance music, moving on quickly to the UK in the `70s. Over the years it grew and evolved into the ska we know currently.
Today, ska is fast paced dance music with guitar, bass, drums, horns, and sometimes keyboard. It ranges from hard punk-like music (a.k.a. skacore) to a jazz type ska (usually found with older ska bands). Bands you've probably heard of, Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Sublime are borderline ska.

Yay for being the bearer of bad news.
So, I guess it's time to add Five Iron Frenzy to the list, along with Save Ferris. Yes, those fruity wonderful guys from FIF are calling it quits after their next album. This has actually been decided for a while, but I didn't think to post it here until now.
Oh, well. At least they're breaking up on good terms, unlike Save Ferris. Sometimes you just gotta move on. And I have to accept that no matter how much it sucks. Okay. Excuse me while I go off into a corner and cry.

HOLY, I didn't think there'd be a Ska thread!
I've listened to Ska since I was in Grade 6 [and am in Grade 11 now]...it's possibly my favourite music genre!
I listen to more third wave than I do first or second wave, and I've gotten a lot of slack for that, but eh. Whatevs.
Favourite band is, hands down, Planet Smashers. Soo good. Following the Smashers is Streetlight Manifesto [Tomas Kalnoky is one of my music lovers],Big D & The Kids Table and Choking Victim [people label them Ska-Core, but I don't give a shit. It's all Ska.].
Ska stuff like Sublime and Operation Ivy is good, too.
