no, race was an issue in 1963, when Sidney Poitier won for Best Actor. here in 2002, it doesn't matter because everything's so diverse now. in 1963, sure, most everything was apart of "White Man's World", but in 2002, it's not.

I'm pretty sure it's 11%. Of course, it's possible that I may be off by a couple percent. But that isn't really the point. The point is that blacks are a minority and obviously there are a lot less of them than whites. Therefore, it makes more sense that more white people win the awards than black people. Anyway, race should not be an issue. It's completely irrelevant, in my opinion. I don't think of Halle Berry as a "black actress". I think of her as an actress.

Halle Berry was so emotional because she made history. Take it from someone that is black, it is still hard to be taken seriously at a lot of things today when your black. They're has been tons and tons of films that shouldn've have at least got a nomination for something. But the Academy does look at race. A lot of people in Hollywood don't take Black Hollywood actors seriously and think it's weird to see blacks portraying a positive, and yet serious role in a movie. Many of them think that were just funny actors. So when Halle and Denzel won, they realized how blessed they were and that they made history. It took years for the script of Monsters Ball to get funded for because people thought it was weird that a Black person was playing a serious role. But movies like Juwanna Mann got picked up much more quickly than Monsters Ball because Juwanna Mann is a comedy and many whites want to see black people actin a gawd damn fool in movies. Movie like The Color Purple, The Wiz, The Best Man, Love and Basketball, Jungle Fever, and many, many more weren't even looked at to be nominated for anything at The Academy Awards but were just as good as movies like A Beautiful Mind, and had very very talented actores that were just as good as many movies that has won,if not better than previouslt winning movies. But like I said, It all goes back to the people that have a say so in who wins the awards mainly wants to see blacks that are funny. I know thats sounds strange, but its very true. And when Halle Berry won she was so proud of herself and thought the she must have done a damn good job in the movie if she made the whites even say "Wow, she should win" And she did. Thats what made her so emotional. I was just as emotional as she was because I knew what a spectacular accomplishment she had made, and how long it took for us to get on that level. Thats why she was so emotional.
Off The subject but, I think Halle was the best dressed and Will she should have won over Denzel.

^^if you think blacks have it bad, just think what us Native Americans have to go through- the only time we ever get put in movies, is when it has to do w/ Native Americans (like "Dances With Wolves"). you NEVER see a Native American in other comedies or dramas or even action-adventures.

^^ I agree, but there still so much more to it than what I stated. I think it's sad that minorities don't get awarded or even nominated for acting in good roles. Also it's not because there is less minorities in the US. There's almost more Hispanics than whites in America. But you don't see Hispanics getting nominated either.

^^i agree. we have all these ppl that are white (like Irish, French, ect) that are comin' over here to the States to get to Hollywood. & even though there's nothing wrong w/ that, they get pushed off as "Americans" (even sometimes adpting an American accent), & *they* usually get all of the really good roles & those of us that are from the USA (no matter what race) usually get "the left-overs." & even if you're American, white Americans do get more/better roles than everyone else. that really pisses me off, ya know?

Umm hello, Cass is right. There are more whites in movies because there are more whites in the US. When it comes to hispanics, no there are not more hispanics in the US than whites. Maybe in places like Miami, but as a whole.. no it's not. The population majority is still whites, and so the majority you will see in films will be whites.
And another issue that's irked me, I'm glad Halle Berry won, but don't forget this.
SHE IS HALF WHITE!!
I wish people would stop calling her african american, and totally ignoring half her roots. You people would be pissed if people were calling her white, and ignored her african american side, right? Yeah, you would. So please respect her, because it took two people to make her, not one person asexually, so she is both black, and white.
I think she's a good actress though, and was happy to see her win. I didn't see the awards show though.

In American, constitutionaly, if your half black your considred black. And Naru, in the state of California, there is more Hispanics. But there is a lot of black films that are great that don't make it to the big screen. Thats what I'm saying. If more people funded for black films, then there would be almost as many black films that there is white.
