Ok,Im really not sure where this is supposed to go,so I just put it here::
AnYwAy,I saw this debate in some magazine at school saying that they might be starting to make all movies that has smokers in it 'R'-rated. Theyre doing this because they think kids/people will take up the habit because they see it so much on the big screen. But what are your thoughts about this??

I dont think that movies with smoking in them should be rated R if that is the only reason for that rating. It is not an illegal activity and can add to the theme of the movie, especially if it is set in an earlier time. If you can't handle someone smoking then hopefully you wear a blindfold when you walk outside and I hope to God that you have never walked in store that sells ciggerettes, I mean when is enough PC garbage enough?

[glow=green,2,300]Pot[/glow]smoking, maybe. But cigarette smoking, no. I think it is very naive to think that there aren't some teens that smoke. And clearly, in movies with adult storylines, it is unrealistic to sanitize the act of smoking. However, I think the whole practice of product placement by cigarette companies should stop. Allowing children & impressionable teens to easily identify brands by making the colors & logos blatantly visable, sends the wrong message. Like with other products in movies, anything that identifies cigarettes (Pictures, logos, or unique color patterns) should be masked if at all possible. Perhaps, like with other items, producers who use cigarettes as a plot device could use generic brands, which tend to be in less recognisable packaging.
I smoke, but I really don't want movies encouraging my kid to do what I do.

If we're talking solely about cigarettes here, then I have to agree with pettyluv.
It doesn't matter if you change the rating of the movie; kids will see smokers and cigarettes elsewhere, whether it be in stores that sell them, or in their own home.
I mean, if a kid lives with a parent or older sibling that smokes, do you really think shielding a movie from him/her is going to make a difference?
If you really want to make a difference and prevent kids from seeing it, then you might as well ban smoking for good. Otherwise, they'll see it, somehow, someway. They need to be educated about smoking; the health issues and whatnot. So educate them. Don't shield it from them, and pretend it doesn't exist.

^^^^^^ I agree with you too. I mean I have a friend, one of my BFFs who smokes and she's only 14. Ive tried smoking 3 or 4 times (once with a black and mile) and I in no way got it from movies. I dont even pay attetion to the drug use in a movie unless thats what the movie is..actually about. I took it up from my friend, which she took it up from her friends and family. So its like a cycle,so movies dont have ANYTHING to do with smoking.

<<<more suitable>>>
Does that mean under-18s can still watch R-rated movies, even if it's suggested they don't? In Britain, we have U (any age), PG (parental guidance), 12 (no person under 12), 15 (no person under 15) and 18 (no person under 18). And then illegal stuff.
I don't think cigarette smoking should be banned from films, because what good would that do? I don't think smoking's a good idea, but watching people smoke in films makes much less effect than watching my friends smoke.

^^^ Well, here in the US, you can see an R-rated movie if you're under 18, as long as you are with a parent. Although, I've gone to several R-rated movies, and they never checked my ID. Some of the movie theatres are really lenient on that kind of thing; they just don't care. Other theatres are a pain in the ass.

I think that this is stupid. This is kinda like how people say that music makes people kill, and stuff like that. If you are going to smoke, you will smoke. I don't think anyone is going to start smoking b/c they saw it in a movie. This is just stupid!
