Seriously, a lot of people kill themselves and others because of their reckless driving. Why do they do it? Is taking a couple of minutes off your journey really worth taking a life (or ten)?

Good topic. I completely agree. I drive too fast sometimes, but I slow down. I have a bad habit of going 10-15 miles over the speed limit. One day, I'm going to get pulled over, so I have got to stop. Thank you for reminding me. Man, I am a baaaaad driver.

Nebby's restricted to 30mph at the moment, so I'm more likely to be pulled over for delaying other traffic .

I totally agree. So many people get killed daily by reckless driving. Sure, following the speed limit may add a few minutes to your drive, but is it really worth losing your life for it?

I drive fast, but not recklessly. I make sure I have control over the car. Some of the speed limits are ridiculously slow, anyway. I've seen speed zones that were 15 mph. Do you know how impossible it is to go that slow? It's just stupid. Also, I do drive fairly fast on the express way, but I'm not the fastest one out there. I've never gone faster than 80 mph, and around here, there are a lot of people who go faster than that. Anyway, I think slow drivers are just as bad, if not worse, than fast drivers. I once got stuck behind this old lady who was going 25 in a 45 mph speed zone. I mean, give me a break.

Some people can't go any faster than 25/30mph - older people and those on restricted bikes generally do a maximum of 35mph.
Trust me, we would LOVE to avoid National Speed Zones, ie. 45/50mph roads, but most often, we can't.
Nothing is scarier than having people overtaking you. I was almost killed last night on my moped when coming home from work. It was really windy and I was having trouble keeping Nebby upright, and just as I was starting to get my speed up, a truck overtook me fast, sent me completely off balance, and if I hadn't performed an emergency stop, my bike would have been thrown off course completely, and I would have been long gone.
Think about that before you try and overtake!

Driving a truck ain't no picnic either. They're huge vehicles that are hard to see around and drive even with mirrors. Both drivers and cyclists have to be accountable for their own safety as well as others they're sharing the road with. I know you drive a motorbike, but I ride a bicycle, and I make sure it's lit up at night and that I wear reflective clothing. I hate it when I'm driving and some Bozo is dressed in black and walking in the middle of the road. Or some biker decides to move onto the road without giving any signal.
I drive fast too, but not when conditions don't permit. I drive slower on the freeway, reason? Too many times I see a line of brake lights come on for no apparent reason. And when I get up to where this event happened, there's no reason. It's like everyone said, "Hey let's stop here!" I've learned to drive around 60 mph with the cruise control on, that way, people don't tailgate me, and all the Simultaneous Brake Mashers who rocket ahead, do so but I'm far enough behind so I don't have to stop or slow down. Same with main roads, I drive the speed limit, a little below or above, because I have the lights timed. It's great to coast through a series of green lights.

Toxic-Avenger, I've found that when I go 60 mph on the highway, I still get tailgated. That pisses me off, because the speed limit is 45, so that means that I would be going 15 over that. I know people who go 90 down that same street (keep in mind that it has many hills and curves on it). Now THAT is stupid. I drive fast, but I think that my speed is still reasonable. And if it's raining or snowing, I go slower than that, of course.

dizzyupthegirl- I've seen roads in quite a few countries and I have to say Dubai is the most deadly. Nobody seems to abide by the road rules, and the speed limits are sky high.
