Build one out of a kid's building toy. Use the colored parts as a key to what part of the DNA molecule it represents. Say a red stick is a chromosome, a yellow connector is a nucleus. Label each part and what it represents.
Do they have Tinker toys or K'Nex where you live? Take a look at those.

you could use: different lengths of toothpicks + different colors of mini marshmallows/jube jubes (gummy candies)

My science classroom has a bunch of these hanging from the ceiling. They've been made from everything from pop cans to marshmallows. I wouldn't suggest using food for the different parts though, fruit flies are a bitch. There was one made from a bunch of little wooden balls, all painted to represent a different part of the..... thing (we studied biology earlier this year, but the different parts of DNA already slipped my mind).

You could do as Watson and Crick and use wire. Make the basic structure out of coat-hanger wire and then make the bases, sugars and phosphate groups out of big wooden beads.

*sighs* Schools come up with the stupidest projects. Why do you need to build a freaking DNA model if you already know about all the components? It's just tedious and a waste of time. But to answer your question, I really don't have any ideas other than what people already suggested.

Lol, haha, sorry I dont have any new ideas (they were all taken) but last year while studing DNA in Science, on a test...I spelled DNA wrong, and the person correcting it raised their hand and said "What if they spelled DNA wrong?" and the teacher said "Well since they spelled it out its ok" they replied back "No...they spelled the abrieviation wrong" Everyone laughed cuz they knew it was me! ;D
