I actually had an issue with this issue. A while ago, and friend and I really had to go to the bathroom and I have a really small bladder and so we were watching a movie in class and I asked if I could go and the teacher said no, and lucky me it was Halloween and so I snuck out when the over head annocement said "Will all Halloween costume contestents please come to the quad, so I ran out and then will I was in the bathroom another annoucement went out and it said "The costume contest is canceled so then I quickly pulled up my pants and ran to class, and I arrived right after another person did and the teacher picked me and said your late! That 20 minutes out of you lunch! I know it was a stupid question, but still I had to go and she didn't even care!

I cannot believe the Supreme Court would make a decision like that. True, sometimes people do abuse the privilage, but that does not give them the right to punish everyone! Like everyone else had said, holding urine in is bad for your bladder and kidneys, and can cause many illnesses and infections. Did the court totally forget about these factors?

a friend of mine had a problem with this a while ago. she's a 10th grader in high school and had been holding it for like two hours, the teacher in the period before had refused to let her go, so she asked the teacher in her next period if she could go... explaining the situation. the guy still wouldn't let her go. she ended up in tears... and by the time she got to the bathroom, she couldn't go. she ended peeing out blood and stuck with a bladder infection.
it's also a crap situation when girls are on their period and they're not allowed bathroom rights - hi, who wants to be sitting in class with a dirty pad/tampon? not fun.

Teachers not allowing your request to go to the bathroom are unbelievable. I can understand that they wouldn't want their lesson to be interrupted, but why don't they say so? It's not a problem for me as I wait til I get home - I don't go at school, but when others ask, all they get is a 'you should have gone at lunch'. Even if two hours have passed since then. It is such a pathetic excuse. One kid at my old school actually peed his pants because he couldn't hold it in. I didn't actually see it though. Another girl started her period, resulting in blood all over her chair. It's not right.

That's ridiculous. My mom has taught me since I was young that if I had to go to the bathroom, reeeaaally bad, and the teacher either refused me or told me to wait, that I was to go and she'd take care of whatever punishment I recieved. Your school can't punish you as well as your parents.
It's far more embarassing to wet your pants in the middle of your class or get a huge red stain. I know teachers think you're faking it, but for christ sake, what harm could it do to just let someone go to the bathroom? If they wanted to skip class, they would have.

I think that is so messed up, my cousin had to go and her teacher said she couldn't, so my cuz just walked out and ended up getting a refferal, but her parents didn't care!
YOu could actually get a law suit with the whole not going to the bathroom thing, cause, if you hold it too long, your bladder can get larger or somthing like that, and its really bad!Or the Bladder Infection you can sue for that too!

Most of my teachers allow us to go but some of them are really cruel when it comes to missing even a second of class so they won't allow us to go. Honestly, if I were stuck in a situation like that, I would just walk out. I'd rather be chastised by the principal herself than end up with any sort of infection.

Well this year and last year we have this little restroom pass thing so you'd have one for the girls and one for the guys and so you'd just hold it up like you were raising your hand and they'd reconize you and then you could go. And you would just have to wait until the person got back....if it was an emergancy then you could go...but most people realize how bad it feels when you have to go to the bathroom and you cant go until the person there comes back...so they come back. So...I dont see any problems with this system so far....

Thats some of the dumbest shit I've ever heard. I can't believe they think that. When in the hell are they using the restroom ? Well, I know... The do it in passing period and come back late to class. And they're late, and they don't even have to make a trip to their locker and pick up books. Or have trouble opening the locker. They really expect us to do all that and make it to the bathroom in our five minutes of passing period, not to mention in a very crowded hallway. Thats just dumb. Teachers expect us to do the impossible under impossible circumstances.... and teachers are supposedly smart...well, they just lack common sense.
One time this guy in 7th grade had to go for an hour in this class, and the teacher didn't let him go. This guy got to the point of tears and this teacher waited another 15minutes to let him go. He finally just walked out, and everybody clapped since for him when he walked out. The teacher's lazy ass just sat there. How ridiculous.

^^^ In my old high school, they locked some of the bathrooms between classes. How retarded is that? So obviously, you had to go during class (unless you could get to a bathroom before it was locked). We had these stupid bathroom passes. There were 50 slots for the entire year. Considering we had 185 days of school, that would mean that you could only go to the bathroom about once every four days. I don't know about any of you, but I had to go to the bathroom at least a couple times during the school day. So I usually went between classes anyway, and was late. It's not my fault that they only give you 50 times to go to the bathroom. Well, actually, you could buy another bathroom pass for $4. But is that ridiculous or what? You have to pay to go to the freaking bathroom? I am so glad to be out of there.

I was doing some research on this topic, and was unable to find reports of such a ruling made by the Supreme Court. I'm thinking about using it as a speech topic - does anyone have links to any relevant resouces I could use?

Well, actually, you could buy another bathroom pass for $4. That's horrible! We're not in Europe, going to the bathroom is not a special privilege, everyone has to go and they shouldn't limit the times you are allowed to. If a teacher won't let me go, I swear I'll walk out of there, because I don't have enough time to wade through a crowded hallway, find a bathroom, pee, and go across the whole school to get to my locker and then back to get to the class in 6 minutes. My mom would not mind me getting punished, she always warns me about frostbite and bladder infections and she'd probably go over to the school and yell at them so I would not be punished by them. Peeing is a natural thing and it's not an option, when you gotta go, you gotta go and most people don't abuse this. People who do, well, their grades will pay for it later.

We have a very strict principal and we are not allowed to go to the bathroom in classes. This girl, Brittany, asked Mr.Ingram if he'd let her go to the bathroom and he asked her why and she told him that she had bladder problems and he still wouldn't let her go so she said, "F*ck you, Mr.Ingram." and walked out the door. If I ever have to go to the durned' bathroom I'll go. ;D I don't give jack if its a right or a privledge.
