It's not such a bad gig. The job is a little dull, but at $7.00 an hour with the chance to make $12.00 an hour, it's relatively easy money. The abuse isn't that bad, some of the comments are funny too. Might be something to try. I work five hours per evening at four nights a week. Might be something to do, work it six months and now you have job experience with out busting your bum at a resturant.

I was thinking about going into that because, like you said, it isn't a bad gig. And the funny thing is, I do bust my butt in a restaurant (hostess/waitress). LOL But the bad thing about telemarketing, is that all the positions I have found, you need experience, so it's like a catch-22: How am I going to get experience if no one will help me gain it? Hmph.

I've found in those situations, that they PREFER experience but some places will hire you if you don't. Try it anyway. I've got it so I don't work weekends too, and I let them know up front when they hired me. Sometimes, the "Experienced Preferred," or Experience Required" is just to keep people who may not work as hard as they want.
Sometimes, just showing up for work is all they look for. All telemarketing is, is the computer dials the number, you read a badly written script, then the customer says "no," and on the the next call. Next.

I would never want to do any type of sales or marketing job. I actually called this marketing place in April when I was looking for a job. I didn't know what I would have to do, but the number was written on the chalkboard of my classroom. It said "$16.50 an hour". So I called, had an interview, and got hired. Well, then I found out exactly what I would have to do. I was going to have to go to people's houses and try to sell them knives. The guy who was in charge of this thing wanted me to call up my neighbors and practice it with them for an hour and a half each. Then, supposidly, I was going to get references to other people. What a complete and utter scam. First of all, there was no way in hell I was going to bother my neighbors. Secondly, if people want knives, they will buy them at a freaking store like any normal person. And lastly, people HATE salespeople. They'd probably stab me with my own product. So I called and quit right away. The guy was a completely jerk to me about it, but I didn't care. I can find a much better job.

OMG, Cass! Same thing over here! I got hired, then I talked to my parents about it... It finally dawned on me that this was pretty much one of those "triangle" scams... I was just happy I had found a job that I didn't think much of it. Needless to say, I called the guy back the next morning and told him thanks for the opportunity but no thanks. Did they do the demonstration with the scissors that cut through a thick piece of rope? <snorts>

Me too! I once answered an ad to sell these over-priced vacuum cleaners. After a week of training, I wimped out. Well, seems six months later after being told I was missing out on a "sure thing," the bosses van was sitting on two flat tires in a snowbank and the sign was gone. I tried Amway once, but my BS radar went up. Every time I asked a question, I got riddles and vague answers, so I told the guy to leave. IMMEDIATELY! I just got a raise after being there a month. I get another one before the month is out.

Hey.Now.Girl:
Oh my god, it must have been the company! Yes, they did the demonstration with the scissors and the rope. They also cut through a penny, I think. Was the name of the company "Cutco"?

Cass, I believe it was. The penny thing was pretty cool, but I think I need to start trusting my instincts more. I got this weird feeling when the guy started talking about using your neighbors to practice on and selling them to your family. I kept thinking to myself, "If this stuff is so great, why aren't you really going to a retail store with this product?" They gave us some sort of "sly" answer like, "It sells itself" and "It would be more expensive, so we cut out the middle-man", which I guess would be true theoretically, but... if the stuff was so great, it would fly off the shelves in a retail store, no? <shakes head>

^^^ Exactly. And they claim that they hire college students because they think that they are friendly and will make good salespeople. Um, they probably use college kids because they think we are dumb and naive enough to sell their shit for them. Unfortunately, some people are.

Ive had a couple telemarketing jobs. The 2nd job was great! They hired me on the spot at 8 bucks an hour. The boss was awesome, a total alcoholic pothead. We got smoke breaks whenever & had a million hilarious stories to tell about our job. The only part was it was stressful at times when you werent making enough money bc we had to make 100 bucks/hour line.
