It takes me so much to consider someone a friend. It usually takes years. Ppl always say: 'Oh yeah, I have so many friends I can count on.' But in their desperate time of need, they find out who their real friends are. Sometimes they find out what the true meaning of a friendship is. I only have a few real friends out there and a million aquantences.

In my opinion, there are three categories of people: Acquaintances, those who you know but really aren't that close to socially; Casual Friends, those who you can connect with on some levels but who you really may not feel comfortable completely confiding in; and True Friends, those who will always be there for you and who are always available when you need their support most. They are the people that you feel close to and, in theory, those who will remain with you the longest.
For me, it isn't hard to distinguish a true friend. In all honesty, I only have a handful of people that would really fall into the later two groups. If I even begin to consider someone a true friend, they will know it. Probably what it comes down to most in my case is trust. If I'm able to trust someone with something personal, that is the genuine sign of a true friend.

Trust me, I learned the hard way in middle school *thank gosh that's over with* and during that time just ended up getting my feelings hurt and feeling like there was something wrong with me.

When I think about it like that, I mostly have a lot of acquaintances and casual friends. I don't have any true friends right now.

For me, I don't have a "bff" or a group, and no REALLY close friends, but I have "friends".

sigh, unfortunately it takes alot for me to consider someone as a friend. there are just very few people i really trust. i have many casual ones, perhaps you could call them aquaintances and nothing more. but real friends? ah.. few, but they're wonderful.
