This used to be an issue back at Razzberry, and I'm continuing it here, as you can probably tell from the title. That and the fact that I couldn't think up of anything original.
How do you feel about being called "sweetie," or "darling"? I haven't witnessed much of it happening around these boards, but for me, it'd depend purely on the situation and the user.
It can come off as condescending, but it can also be reassuring and affectionate. This may be simply stereotypes, but I would feel somewhat unplesant if a person younger than me referred to me as "sweetie."
What are your views?

I don't see any problem with it. I think it's just a friendly way of talking to someone.

How is that an issue? I call people of all ages "sweetie" as do many others. You can be a "sweetie" or a "darling" at any age. Besides, a good thing about this board is that we don't descriminate because of age. We're all pretty much equal and on the same level here.
Just my views, sweetie.

But to me, it somewhat feels that if I was referred to as "sweetie," the person using the word, if younger than me, is simply speaking condescendingly, or is patronising whatever situation it may be. This is not age discrimination, it's just the way I feel. Just my views, sweetie. Appreciated, darling.

I can see what you mean. Sometimes it is used in a sarcastic way, I'm sure even by people older than you. But for the most part, they're just trying to address you in a friendly manner.
I don't have great ISR (Internet Sarcasm Radar), but I know enough to tell when someone is putting me down. I don't think it's really happened here to a great extent, friendly or not.

I haven't seen in that much either, but I don't think it's a problem. If it's being used condescendingly, then something should be done, but for the most part, I've only seen it used affectionately. It depends on the situation.

I can see where you're coming from, but you also have to remember that even though we're a smaller community, lots of people don't know everyone's ages, so if someone younger says it, it's probably purely coincidental, and they don't mean anythimg by it. But like you said, it depends on the situation and the user.

I'm probably the youngest person here! Don't worry guys, I don't call anyone sweetie or dahling! I just feel uncomfortable saying it. I'm not the type of person who says that kinda thing... Saying "Don't worry dahling" just doesn't appeal to me. It sounds weird. I don't like it. No offence!

I always say sweetie and hun. But I rarely say darling. I just think it's another way to show your affection to one another. I tend to use it more in the Support and Recovery forum than anywhere else, for some reason. But I always call my friends sweetie and hun too. It's just habit sometimes I suppose. But I have no problems with it, unless someone's trying to put me down of course. Then it turns into a problem.

The exchange of 'hun' and 'sweetie' were not something Razzberry did. It was something that was happening around the boards, and caused some minor conflicts between users. These are issues that should be addressed amongst a community.
That was a way different website anyway. Uh, no, it wasn't. Considering this is a Razzberry alternative, there are obvious similarities between the two boards.

Well I can't say that hun bothers me, because it's a word I use often. I basically use the word hun in every sentance I say in real life, but I try to cut it out when I'm here because I know that some people find it condesending. I really just think it's a friendly term though.

To myself and others, it isn't a problem, but some people find it uncomfortable to be called those things, especially by strangers on the internet. It's all personal preference. I don't mind if anyone calls me sweetie, hun, darling, etc., as long as it's meant in a generally nice way.
