I'm just wondering, is there a way to act a race? Because I don't think so! I think it's dumb! For instance, a Mexican starts liking Chinese food and all the sudden is trying to "act Chinese", or a Caucasian listens to rap, and is trying to "be African-American"! I get judged like that all the time! Whatever you like describes YOU, not a race! What do you think about this prejudice?

I find it rather annoying. Race is a physical characteristic, not a mental one. I don't think there's any way to act like a skin color, but people just associate different behaviors and tastes with skin colors, and that's just not nice.

Do you mean like......like lets say Eminem for example, like he raps,he's trying to be African-American because of what he does and how he acts?? and you get judged like that?? I really think thats stupid for someone to judge someone for what they like, like you said...I mean sometimes it could get out of hand and someone could start, I dont know, I guess dressing like, well I mean ya'know, ACTING and trying to be someone of a different race (if thats possible,I guess to some the Eminem example is what I mean **shrugs**) I mean I just think this is stupid. It doesnt matter what you like,lol... **people these days** ~~~~~~Heather,(Edward Furlong,Mike Shinoda,Chester Bennington,KidRock & Joe C. LOVER!!!!!! Linkin Park RULES!!!!!!) (^^^^^^I hope the above wasnt confusing to anyone, lol)

Sometimes my friends and I will call people (our friends, obviously, who realize we don't mean anything rude) "wannabe asians" or "wannabe blacks," etc. Thinking on it, I can understand how it might offend some. But we're really just kidding...the way we tease my friend Charles, for example, who is the only white male in his *crowd* and eats unique things (lots of seaweed and living organisms...) from gourmet delis, etc. Or my friend Kathleen, who we continually remind that she is, in fact, asian and not black (she peppers her sentences liberally with 'dawg,' 'yo,' 'werd,' 'mad,' etc). *shrug* I dunno, I guess no one really minds because we all know race doesn't mean anything to us. And hey, let me know if you think I'm being disrespectful or anything! I wanna hear some more opinions on this. Love, ~The Kitten~

<<like lets say Eminem for example, like he raps,he's trying to be African-American because of what he does and how he acts??>> African-American? So you're assuming it's wrong for Eminem to rap because it's an African-American profession? Aren't you getting a little stereotypical here?
<<I really think thats stupid for someone to judge someone for what they like>> Don't you mean their physical characteristics? I don't think acting like a race has anything to do with what you like.
<<someone could start, I dont know, I guess dressing like, well I mean ya'know, ACTING and trying to be someone of a different race>> And you think it's wrong? There's no such thing as acting like a race, this prejudice is opposing that.

I agree. It's wrong...Earlier this year one of my teachers said in Drama "Steven you're too white to be acting that black" (he was trying out for a part in Drama and was jokinga round *it was for a part that was african american and was saying "yo dawg" and stuff) But it doesnt even make sence because not all african american's say that...therefore how can they be acting "black" Anywhoo thats just my opinion...

I don't agree with it totally being wrong, cuz sometimes it is true. But not as often as people say. People can't help what they like right ?
Some black people think that I act white which annoys me to the fullest. That is so very wrong! They think since I talk and socialize with whites then I'm trying to be white. I think because I talk properly most of the time. I also know more about our culture than most blacks my age, well any age actually.Yeah I listen to pop, and rock every now and then. But I didn't know wasn't entitled to listen to other genres of music besides r&b, rap, and hip-hop. But I guess since I don't use slang as much as the blacks at my school and don't sound ghetto, then they see me as a white wannabe. I love my heritage, probably more than they do ! Just because I aim to be featured in Black Enterprise Magazine, if not on the cover of it, then they take it as "Ugh, she think she all that" !!! Well I guess thats enough ranting, for now. But it make me sooo angry when I hear that.

^^^ Those people are just ignorant then. You should be able to listen to whatever music you want. Also, I don't see why they have a problem with you speaking properly. And they think that black people are the only ones who have bad grammar? I know plenty of white people who don't speak correctly. It has nothing to do with race. It's great that you speak properly, and that you have done a lot of research about your heritage. Don't change yourself just to fit in. If people don't accept you because you are actually doing something intelligent, then it's their loss.

^^^ Thanks Cass...
I'll never change just to fit someones idea of black. Like you said, it's their loss of not getting to know someone intelligent. But because I act the way I do, many black people do not even take the chance of getting to know me, and thats what hurts. But oh well... I guess I'm just more mature than them and aim to be succesful then them. And I belive I will be. I know this may sound cruel, but I can't wait to the day when I'm 35 and I run into someone that didn't think I was worth their time, and I have my dream car and job. And their working minimum wage. I want them to think "Gee, I wish I would've gotten to know Marlouise Amber Childress!" But like I said, it's their loss.

i guess that i could post some vapid remark about yes, i agree, you can't act a race in here and leave and be a total hypocrite but i won't. when i was little i thought everyone lived in a household obsessed with their ethnic heritage like mine.... so people who didn't know shit-all about indian culture acted 'white' to me. and then i figured out, people can act however they want. in the end, its your choice of music, food, beliefs, clothing...blah de blah...your choice of culture. and you can act a race: in a sense...hear me out here: you can practice follow and believe and imitate certain practices associated mainly with a certain culture right? and certain races share a common culture right? so in a sense you can. but that doesn't make you an idiot. i do that. i take from each culture, something i value and follow it. it doesn't necessarily mean that all those people of that colour, or gender or whatever do that thing...a lot of them maybe. when i was little, shows like the fresh prince and books about harriet tubman made me realise i should be proud to be a person of colour. my many many asian friends taught me to respect the elderly. the abundance of native people in my society and social circles taught me to respect nature, and so on. my own culture taught me to value my family and education. i LOVE jazz......and jazz has its foundations in african american culture. does that make me a wigger? i am a punk....does that make me a whitey? i dunno....it may at first seem a bit odd to you that a certain person chooses to adopt certain values...but thats what they want to be, and thats what they will be. so other people should accept that.

African-American? So you're assuming it's wrong for Eminem to rap because it's an African-American profession? Aren't you getting a little stereotypical here?i don't think that that's what Likinpark_girl meant at all. i think that she was just looking for some clarification in the topic that was being presented. i personally don't think that there is such a thing as a "african-american profession" or a "Caucasian profession". the 1960's is over. if people can't see past the color of your skin, then that just shows you how insecure they really are.

Ugh....... I hate how people say that. Yet I know I've been guilty have accusing people of acting [insert race]. But okay, at my school, which is probably like 95% white, there are tons and tons and tons of white guys who act ghetto. BUT THIS IS NOT THE GHETTO. I live in a suburban area where everyone is pretty much middle-class and up. I could understand white guys who act "black" because they grew up in an area like that. But the guys at my school just try to be "thuggish" because they think it's cool.
I'm Korean but I grew up with a lot of white people... and I've been accused of acting white. I'm not purposely acting white (I don't even know HOW...) but this is the way I've always lived and that's all.
I really hope I didn't contradict myself too much.

I hate people who say this too. One of my best friends (who is my roomate here in college) is black. When we were in high school, all the other black girls would making fun of her for acting "white" instead of "black". (i.e. she didn't listen to rap, didn't wear urban-style clothing, etc.) Yet, none of the people that made fun of her got into college.
