Okay, I was at my bf's house and his Mom came home saying she got to meet Tyra Banks the supermodel. And I personally look up to Tyra Banks as a role model especially after reading her book Tyra's Beauty Inside And Out. My boyfriend said something to his Mom about that, and his Mother's reply was "she can't look up to her!! her skin isn't like ours and she's too short!" WHAT THE FUCK? That comment went through me so badly it hurt. Since when did looking up to someone meant you had to look like them or be that race?
I don't care what color Tyra's skin is, I like her because of the person she seemed to be in her book. (I didn't say is considering I've never met her) and the fact she seemed open about her own flaws and wanted to help young girls with self esteem issues. She even risked her "perfect look" image being supermodel by showing a picture of her without makeup and an after with makeup and airbrushing. That took a lot of guts to me, and it shows she seems caring about people and what they think. Her book alone helped my self esteem so much. That's a big reason why I like her so much.
Is it wrong for me to like her even though we may be opposites regarding looks (I have pale skin and she's dark skinned), and should you only like people who look like you or be the same race?

Good for you! Always stand up for what you believe in and encourage others to do that too! Being Asian I'm not faced with this problem. I look up to people no matter what their skin colour is. Nelson Mandela (how could ANYbody not look up to him?) is always at the top of my list.

I think that comment was very rude, and I've never heard anyone say something like that before. Anyway, I think Tyra Banks is really pretty. I don't know much about her, but from what you said, she seems like a great role model. Who cares what she looks like? That's not what being a role model is about.

Hmmm... sounds like your bf's mom is a little racist. I admire Tyra Banks, Nelson Mandela, as well as Alicia Keys and Mary J. Blige, none of whom are the same race as I am. Someone's race is not a factor in whether or not I respect them. The qualities of a role model have nothing to do with race.

That was so incredibly rude! I look up to Tyra Banks also. She's my role model. I love her. And for your boyfriends mom to make that statement was so.....ugh, racist! I also look up to Alicia Keys, because she's a very talented and inspirational young lady.

You all have good points. She's a great role model. She's struggled to get her fame, and has had some confidence problems. If that's how his mother expects to get through life, good luck to her. Society is becoming very accepting of all races, and very intolerant of racists. Hopefully your boyfriend won't turn out like that. People learn a LOT of their morals and values from their parents. Chances are, he'll be accepting, since racism is decreasing through new generations.

Thats bullshit !! Many of the people adore are White, Hispanic, and Asian...and I'm African-American. Such people like Andie McDowell and Reese Witherspoon are magnificent people to me and they are not of my race. People are sooo ignorant !!!

Thanks everybody for replying. ^__^
I agree with everybody here. I'm glad my boyfriend doesn't think that way. He has known that I look up to Tyra for a long time, and never made such a comment. I was surprised to hear it come from his Mom who is usually really nice to me lately.
Regarding her I'm gonna let it go even though it made me mad, but I feel better now to know I'm not the only one who thinks that way.
Thanks again everybody. ^__^

Of course you can look up to black people, Naru. The woman who said that obviously lacks the thing called Common Sense. ;D ;D ;D

While I won't say Trya Banks is my role model, I will say she's quite good looking though.
Skin color shouldn't really make any difference in terms of respect. Respect should be gained and lost based upon one's personality and actions alone. I respect my manager at work, even though she's African American. I couldn't imagine not respecting her. Sure, we've had our differences in the past, but, with a manager, who don't?
