I hate how people pull up the ends of their eyes to imitate Asians. Or pretend to mock the languages by saying "Ching cho--ooong" or something. It's so immature and stupid. I also hate how everyone assumes you're Chinese, if you're Asian-looking. There are MANY more nationalities than that. I myself am Korean. I haven't come across too much racism throughout my life, thankfully. But I've had the typical "Are you Chinese?" "Are you Japanese" "...then what ARE you?" I'm a friggin PERSON, dammit. Oh well, enough of this rant. I don't really know what my point is... but this is just the place to discuss prejudice against Asians.

I think that doing the eye thing, the talking thing is stupid. Geez and you're right there are wayy more nationalities than Chinese, and Japanese.

I know a girl who is Korean, and she gets offended when anyone thinks she's Chinese. There's differences in every Asian culture, and it's unfair to generalize like that.
(Offtopic: this same girl has a shirt that says "Made in Korea"... I just find that amusing.)
I'll admit, I can't determine an Asian's nationality just by looking at them. My friend tried to explain to me the differences in the last names... Which made it a little easier.

^^^ It's the same thing with Africans. Africa is a continent, not a country. And each African country has a separate culture. However, many people don't make that distinction.

I cannot comprehend prejudice against Asians. I'm Caucasian and I've wanted to be Asian my entire life. I've pretty much never heard any prejudice towards Asian people, but my town is known for being very liberal and open-minded, plus there are a lot of Asians here.

^^ Being Asian isn't easy. I don't care what anybody says about us not being discriminated against- it happens and I've seen it. It's sad how most of the time our qualifications, knowledge and experience aren't as valuable as a Caucasian's. We're paid less for the same work, or how we're treated like illiterates just because our skin is a different colour.

^ Yea my mom is Asian (from the Philippines) and sometimes at work people assume she's not that educated or had a good education.
But I have to say that being any race is a little tough these days. Whites here in my city/school are getting made fun of and being put into stereotypes.

^ I'd have to agree with you, Ice. Maybe it doesn't happen everywhere, but my town is psycho about 'celebrating diversity' and yes, white people do tend to be discriminated against.
^^ Being Asian isn't easy.
I never said it was.

Whites here in my city/school are getting made fun of and being put into stereotypes. that's true. being ANY race isn't easy. it's not just "minorities" anymore. i put minorities in quotations because though i am white, i AM an minority where i live... and whites are not supposed to be the "minority" race. but i am DEFINITELY discriminated against. i am constantly stereotyped and made fun of for being white. and affirmitive action, hey, i say rever discrimination. i know it keeps me from getting jobs.

I guess I'm taking this discussion to another level and it shouldn't be posted here but I'm not sure where to say it so I'll say it in here. But in my school, for example, if a white guy dresses "urban" or aka in my school "thuggish" they are considered a wannabe. But if a black person, Asian, or Hispanic person dresses like that it's okay for them and they don't get made fun of. Goes the same for music. I don't know...but all I can say is that any race these days is getting stereotyped and made fun of which is horrible and stupid.

If you're like me, you don't make distinctions because you don't know what they are, not because I'm a bigoted slob. Sure I've taken the time to figure out or have it occur to me that for example Japanese names are multisyllabic, whereas Chinese names have one syllable, but these distinctions can get you into trouble also and one hesitates to try to determine who is what nationality, and even this post can raise some blood pressures. I do the best I can.
As to Asians being of lesser intelligence, I find that hard to beleive, I mean it freaks me out when I see some little seven year old Aisian kid at our church hammering out Bach and Brahms on a grand piano with the skill of a seasoned musician!

Isn't the stereotype usually that Asians are superintelligent?
That's the way I've usually heard it.

<<Isn't the stereotype usually that Asians are superintelligent?>>
Hm. Well. Visible minorities are kind of considered of lesser intelligence at times, especially when applying for jobs (or so says my mom). And it's even worse for me because I'm a girl. Female + visible minority. Oh well.
But the stereotype of Asians being superintelligent is annoying as well ... a lot of people expect me to be some crazy smart brainer who loves math and studies 24/7. That pisses me off. Especially when I complain about a mark I got and people say, "What? But you're Asian! You're always smart".

Yes, well, people expect me to be really smart because I look smart, or because my sisters were smart. It's not always about being a minority.
