SARS - Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome I'm sure most people have heard of this virus.
I live in Ontario, and this has really been scaring me lately ... especially the news. They think it's here to stay. Which is really scary because they hardly know anything about this; how to treat it, how to avoid it, etc. I'm just praying for some miracle vaccine and cure.

I've been watching the development of this for awhile. I heard the Mayor of Toronto, he was angry that the World Health Organization told people to stay away from Toronto. The US seems strangly immune, but that could change immediately and will be short-lived. Geez, we have to worry about that on top of West Nile Virus. Can't wait for the scare-mongers to come out on all this soon.

^^They already have - sales on gas masks have sharply risen in Canada, especially in Ontario. There are those who walk around the streets of Toronto wearing masks. In fact, some men were arrested awhile back for inciting fear due to wearing masks. I'm not that worried about getting it - it hasn't really spread to Montreal yet. If it does come here, I'll probably freak out, but in the meantime, I'm worried more about West Nile virus, which One Big Rush mentioned.

This is really sad. I hope that they will find a cure for it soon and learn more about it.

The bad news about SARS is that they don't even know what causes it yet, which makes it wayyyyy harder to be looking for a cure.
The good news it that apparently children and teenagers aren't as likely to get SARS as adults.
...Or so I've heard, anyway.

^^I heard that the really young, elderly and weak were most likely to get it, so you're right that teens are pretty safe, but maybe the children aren't as safe?
I live near Toronto, but I was away while most of the really important stuff happened. (I left April 1st and got back the 18th) but even before I left people had started to walk around wearing masks. I remember there was this one old man at the airport wearing a mask and he had a sign taped on his carry on bag saying "I am not infected, and I don't want to be, don't talk to me."
I think this whole issue is getting carried away, I mean concerts are being cancelled and schools are getting cancelled, if you cough people run away and are like oh you have SARS. But that's just my take on it all..

SARS is already peaking in some places (like Beijing), and even those who catch it are surviving, around 90%.
Frankly, I'm not that worried about it.

There seems to be some agreement that too hbig a deal was made about SARS. Yes, it's a nasty unpredicable bug, but it's not killing tens of millions like the Spansh Flu near the close of WW I or the Black Plague. The only thing that makes SARS really bad is the ability to mutate, so it's harder to fight it with one vaccine.
I really wonder about all these antibacterial scrub products out, where people wash their hands after doing anything to the point of some paranoia. Now there's nothing for the body's immune system to fight off, so it weakens, and something like SARS come along, and the immune systems can' deal with such a superbug.
