trust, honesty, strong communication, a sense of humor about things, and mutual respect. it's impossible, in my opinion, to have a good relationship without those things.
and, as the relationship grows, so do the list of things you must have to keep it healthy.

friendship, understanding, trust, communication, mutual respect, care, consideration, mutual interests (to some extent), characters that mesh well...
attraction - which isn't being shallow, I'm just saying, well yeah you have to be attracted to someone. your relationship has to be more than friendship, otherwise there's no point in saying you're in one.
but compatibility works the best.
