I wasn't quite sure whether to put this in the Predjudice board instead, but since I believe the word "slut" is a completely stereotypical and judjemental one, it fits here fine.
"Slut!" You've heard the word, said the word, have maybe been called it. But do you, or does anyone, really know the true meaning of it? The dictionary defines it as a "sexually promiscuous woman", while society generally extends that definition into "a sexually promiscuous woman who should be looked down upon because of her sexual morality and/or choice of sexual partners".
First of all, why is there a word for a "sexually promiscuous" woman but not for that of a man? What, it's ok for a guy to sleep around, be easy with his choices of partners and have frequent casual sex, but when a woman does this it is not acceptable? So, "slut" is simply a name society gives to women who treat sex the same way guys do, maybe.
Basically, if you're female, you're already subject to being called "slut" and/or gaining a reputation as one, just because of gender inequality as well as judgement, predjudice and the basic stereotype that says that if you're a girl and you're having sex, you're a slut. You might not even be having sex, you could be a virgin as far as that's concerned. But still the name goes round...
A girl is called a slut for so many different reasons. People say the word without even thinking about the real meaning of it. I could type on about more of this, but before I do I'd like to see what everyone thinks. What do you think classifies as a slut? What does "slut" mean and should a girl even be called that name?

OMG great topic, and worded SO well! I can't believe no one has brought this up yet as to seeing how this word is used a lot these days.
They had an hour show called Sex2k, I think that was the title...but it was exactly about this. The first half they interview women, and women celebrities in which they talked about basically what you mentioned. One of the girls they interviewed was this girl known as an "aggressive" type person who does sleep with lots of guys but makes sure to use protection. Another person they interviewed was a woman who I think planned on not having sex until marriage.
The second half was all about the guys and how they feel pressured to push their girlfriends to do more physical stuff or they'd be looked upon as a wimp, loser, etc by their friends.
By the way, welcome to the boards girl!

I was called a slut once, in 8th grade, for absolutely no reason (like seriously, for NO reason, by a girl who is know the sluttiest girl I know.)
The whole sexual double standard is stupid, yes, but one thing about people discussing it bothers me. Why does everyone always say that women should have the right to sleep around as much as men, when most of us don't WANT to? Why isn't it that men should restrict themselves as much as women?

i totally agree with the latter part of your post, paradoxpanda. why shouldn't men be expected to be less pushy and sexual in their ways?
my brother has called me a slut before, and i think it's absolutely ridiculous. i'm a virgin, and the only guy (singular, one, uno), i've ever done anything withis my current boyfriend of over two years. whereas, he's had sex with probably 8 girls and fooled around with probably three times as many. yes, the double standard is disgusting.

I wasn't sure if anyone would even understand what I meant by that, but I feel like it's an important thing to say.

Ya, I'm just graduated 8th grade so people I go to school with don't generally "sleep around" that much but there are a few, and about half mess around and stuff.
Ya, I totally see what you mean and agree. At my school we saw this as a problem and started calling them "man whores" which we started using as the male equivilant to a slut. Now I'm pretty sure this isn't excatly the real meaning of the word but ya.
I agree with this too to some degree, It would be easier for men to restrict themselves if they didn't have to fulfill some stereotype that guys should sleep around, But women should have the right to sleep around and not have to take crap for it if that's what they want.
Yes it is!!!!!

thank you all for replying, i've waited for so long to find a place where i could bring this topic out and actually have it discussed. ThaIceLady: thanks, i'm glad to be a part of these boards ;D
paradoxPanda: i do agree with what you said too, maybe most women don't want to have sex as much as guys, but not all women. You spoke for "most women", but what about the rest? there are still some, maybe alot, of women who do sleep around. It's down to an individual's personal choice whether they want to or not.
Let's go in a slightly different direction; instead of "Slut" being a female stereotype, is that it is a sexually promiscuous female stereotype. To make this a little more simple, let's just decide and understand what it is we're actually talking about here. Let's define the word "slut"... What do we all think a slut is? How many guys must a girl/woman sleep with until she's a slut? Any other ways a girl can classify as a slut?
The answers to these will all be personal beliefs, because "slut" means different things to different people. Hopefully we can all gain some more understanding with this word, because it needs to be understood.

hehehe BrokenSweetHeart, you remind me of my teacher when shes trying to get us to debate over somthing. Ok sorry that was off topic.
A sexually promiscuous woman, this includes the attitude as well as the sleeping around business
There are people I know that don't sleep around that much but act really "sexually outgoing" and therefore are considered sluts and teases. But there are other people that might sleep around a lot more but don't go around bragging about it and don't "kiss and tell" so they arn't considered slutty

""But do you, or does anyone, really know the true meaning of it?""
Yes, I think most do know, but they use it for any occassion. After all, it is a nice little insult to call someone when they stole you're pixie stick. Slut means a woman who sleeps around a lot, but people use it just to sound big and bad.
""I was called a slut once, in 8th grade, for absolutely no reason (like seriously, for NO reason, by a girl who is know the sluttiest girl I know.)""
I know what you mean!! I'm a virgin, and a friend of mine has slept around.. (or so she says).. and she got angry with me one night, and said "You slut!" and then I heard some "Oooh"s..

I was called a slut because, despite my current status of not even getting to first base, I was FLIRTING too much. Oooh, now that's bad!
"Any other ways a girl can classify as a slut?"
How about those girls who act so righteous and say they're deeply religious and yet, whether or not they're virgins, act promiscuously, and let boys do everything except sleep with them?

I was called a slut because, despite my current status of not even getting to first base, I was FLIRTING too much. Oooh, now that's bad! I was called a slut once for NO reason at all. Well, no one actually said it to my face, but it was written on the bathroom wall. But....it was kind of funny, because I only talked to a few guys that year, and didn't flirt with them. AT ALL. I seriously couldn't flirt at that point in time. [Which was okay, because I was in grade 7. And grade 7 kids aren't supposed to be all flirty.] Eh, yeah, okay, that didn't make sense. Whateeeevs.

hehe Another Brick In The Wall...i try my best lol Like I said, the true meaning of slut here is a little bit muddled... What made that girl slutty? How about calling a girl a slut FOR a reason? I mean, because of the real meaning, not because they generally pissed you off. I've been called a slut. Not because of what I did to anyone but because of my sex life. When it gets to this point it is indescribably offensive and it gets me wondering how people think they have the right to pass judjement on something that has so little to do with them. If a girl's sex life, choice in sexual partners and frequency of sex is NO ONE else's business, what right do people have to call her a slut? I think the only time it is right to call someone a slut is when a girl's sex life, choice in sexual partners and frequency of sex causes someone else's emotional pain. They're only a slut if someone gets hurt because of what they do. What do you think?
