What I don't get is.....why does everyone hate preps. A lot of people I know on this board are like, 'Ugh, I hate preps' or 'Preps are so stupid'. Why? Just because of the clothes they wear? What if I'm a prep...are you not going to talk to me anymore?
I don't get it...

Umm, well you'd understand if you were treated like shit your entire school life just because you didn't walk around in $50 name-brand shirt, have rich daddys to spoil you since I actually work for my shit, or date only a specific type of guys.. I have a very good reason to dislike preps thankyouverymuch. I know not all preps are like this, but the majority is and it ruins it for all of you.. too bad so sad. You won't see me crying any tears over this.
Personally, I don't care what you wear. If you told me now you're a prep, it's not gonna make me be like "omg she's a prep I better stay away from her" of course not. I would never sink to such a level, but you should be asking your preppie friends why they only associate with people who wear name-brand shirts and see what they say.
You already have one girl here who calls herself a prep going around acting like "i would only name brand clothes my dad buys for me so i don't have to dress like a hoosier." WHAT THE FUCK?! Prime example of why preps are hated.. you people deserve it.
And btw I think that person is lilblonde or some shit like that saying that.
And to Ms.Thang.. I think if you look at it as part of your personality that's fine, but I've met too many people who tried to use those labels to make themselves seem better than everybody else, so the thought of it is a turn off for me.

Yeah, it is...people here don't act like that at all. I, in fact, don't really think of myself as a prep. I don't hang out with the so-called 'preps' at our school. Though they are very nice to everyone. But oh well. Who cares.

I don't care that it's stereotyping in itself, I see just about everyone as a 'prep'. The word prep has come to mean someone who conforms and goes with the crowd.
So, in that sense, I see most goths, punks, freaks--most people as preps. Very few people are non-conformists, even the ones who claim to be.

I guess 'prep' has a lot of meanings....and I don't really hate preps. I think a lot of them are okay and get judged way too quickly. However, yes, some of them are annoying.
I might qualify as a prep in a very loose sense...but I don't really like labels on anyone.

I've been avoiding this topic; too controversial. But I finally decided to clear my mind of my argument after something my cousin said the other day, something to the extent of "Oh no, I look like a prep. I'm wearing shorts from Old Navy." So it's all about the wardrobe, eh? Well, it seems like what most people I talk to basically draw it down to.
You know, I've seen so many people out there running around bagging on so-called "preps" and essentially judging people before they even know what they're like. Certainly, there are those that do not behave this way, but there are still a large amount of people (like my cousin) who do and I just don't understand why. What do clothes have to do with how a person acts? If I'm right in assuming that the term "prep" today is synonymous with obnoxious snob and egocentric jerk, then there are preps in every little group or clique out there. If we include conformist in there as well: Rebdomine, I think you made a good point.
On the other hand, if prep also = expensive clothes, okay. That doesn't mean they're all a bunch of snobs. I agree, there are people out there who think they are worth more because they have more money and show it with their fancy wardrobe. But you can't rake everyone into this group just because they dress the same as these morons. Who knows, maybe they actually like wearing what they do; they aren't doing it to show off their wealth and cash.
I'm not saying everyone who uses the term "prep" is judgmental - not at all. I just think that wherever you go, there will be people that break that stereotype. There will be friendly people who wear Abercrombie and Fitch. There will be humble people who are also well-to-do. In my mind, there are Normal Everyday People and then there are Your General Snob who believes the world revolves around them. For the people that just look at the clothes to draw conclusion about someone, I have to say I just don't agree with that logic.

Thank God I out grew the phase of thinking "Preps" were out to get me! Lol. Anyway, what I consider preppy is someone who wears A&F and Gap and Old Navy . I'm sure a lot of people would consider a prep to be a cheerleader and etc. But, I call the preps the ones who follow the fashions, make good grades, who get in their cliques and make fun of others. Random Thought (Yes, I have too many of these): Since Avril came out, many of the "Preps" near me started dressing all "Punk" when before they would make fun of and tease those who wore that stuff. Now, since it's popular, almost every girl in Tennessee wants to be the next "Sk8er grrl" . I think that's really stupid. . . Then again, when the Sipe Girls came out I wanted to be Scary and Sporty, so . . . nevermind.

And again, you've asked a great question! This past year me and my friends wore black almost everyday People who didn't even know us thought we were "Goth" and was *sure* that we all worshipped Satan. Ah yes, I worshipped the Devil so much, I wore my Hope church shirt to school every once in awhile. Then, a friend went all out in plaid, combat boots -- the whole "Punk" scene. So-called non-conformists thought she was trying to be a rebel and, therefore, called her a poser all year. Another friend decided to wear a Gap shirt, her birkenstocks and LEI's one day. Everyone (the "preps") thought she was making fun of them (a joke) and kept asking her why she was dressed that who. Who the crap cares! God does not judge! Neither should You! Ok, I'm done preaching.

^ ^ ^ So, because someone makes the honor roll it automatically means they're a prep? Oh wow... that's news to me! How do the grades you get in school make you preppy? The term "Prep" actually came from "prep school/ Private school" which is usually connected to rich people. And the stereotype said " They must be smart if they are too good for public school" So the term got connected with "Oh look what my daddy's credit card got me it was only $750" type of people and so on to what ever a "prep" is where you are. Or so I heard And anyone here who goes to a Private/Prep School I'm not calling you "preppy" or saying you are a bad person in any way!!
