Do you like them? Are you a True Goth? What are the Goths like at your school? What do you think of them?

There really aren't any true goths in my school... Sure, there are the people who will wear American Eagle one day, and the next day come in wearing all-black clothing and spiky chokers, but they're not true goths, obviously. My friend wears black eyeliner and nail polish, and she has people coming up to her asking her if she's gothic! Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I think there's more to it than black clothing!

In general, I like goths. Needless to say, I have come upon many more "true goths" online than I have in my town, if any. It just seems that people around here think that dressing goth is the only way you can be goth. And we both know this is not true.
From here, I will quote the popular cliche that seems to be coming up in many of these discussions: "Goth is a state of mind." And I agree most definitely with this. Just because you dress in black does not make you goth. Your personality must be taken into account as well. But what I know for sure is that "true goths" do not seek out to act gothic - they just are. They do not attempt nor need to stick a label on themselves to show everyone that they are gothic - they are naturally as they are. And I respect that.
Now, I myself would not consider myself to be goth. In truth, I have absolutely no idea in the world what you would classify me as [myself?]. I am not quite fond of labels.
But nonetheless: The problem I have with most people today is that they think being gothic is a matter that only relies on your style of clothing. And I have an even larger problem with those who go along with this current "let's-all-be-goth" trend. But, as one may find surprising, a "true goth" may be just about anyone, for you cannot tell for sure from the outside.
A quote jumps out in my mind which was made by AdelieChick back at razzberry: "The most gothic people that I know wear pastels more than anything. There's a thought for you."
Yes, there is a thought for some.

I don't know any goths. I do know of some people who call themselves "goth" because they shop at Hot Topic (give me a break, *everyone* shops there). I think that's kind of pathetic because goth is not just a style of clothing or a type of music. But a lot of people don't know that.

i've had people call me goth before. i'm not sure how they came to that (inaccurate) conclusion though. i know a few people that are goth, but i don't know of any in my town or really anywhere around here. lately there's been a rash of freshmen boys who, within days, have decided to become "goth" by caking on white makeup and black eyeliner and strapping on spiked chokers and whatnot. they've stooped so low as to hiss at people in the halls. i feel compelled to either laugh hysterically or break down and cry because it's that horrible of an attempt at being what they seem to believe is goth. they really think it's about scaring people and pulling circus geek style stunts they ripped off ozzy osbourne.

" true one I know of at my school is this one girl whose in the 8th grade (Im in 7th...umm..yeah--long story, lol, anyway)and Ive never seen her wear anything but black,"
But that does not necessarily automatically make her a 'Goth'. Anyone can wear black and not be a Goth but Goths can wear pastel shades and no black. Does this girl have a Gothic personality?
"I mean I LOVE the color black, (but my PARENTS dont want me to be Goth so they wont allow me to wear it all the time )"
You can still be a Goth without wearing the black. Yes, it sucks not being allowed to wear black all the time but tell them 'goth' is a mindset, not uniform. Why dont' tehy want you to be a Goth either? Its a personality thing after all, and IF you have the personality, then you cant help that cos thats you.
" this one kid called me a Satanic Witch"
Ignore people like them. I dyed my hair black blue once and I was called a Satan etc... which is quite offensive to me as I believe in God.
"like one of my friends is starting to hang out w/ these other freaks and shes like/to me/ "your not a real freak, because my friend Perry wears all black and lis listens to the music and everything, and your not as a freak as he is"
Okay, I'm repeating myself here. Goth is not about fashion and music as such. ITS A PERSONALITY!

I only know one true Goth. He's my buddy. We have a lot of people in my school who, since they shop at Hot Topic, think they are Goth. Which bugs the crap out of me. They come in and are like, "oh, I hate the world, I wanna die", blah blah blah. Last year they were just like the other teeny boppers in our school, now they claim they're Gothic. But ya know, whatever. People seem to think I'm Goth because I always wear black. They seem to think if a person wears nothing but black, then they're automatically Gothic. Either that, or they think I worship Satan and sacrifice animals. I find it quite amusing that people can assume so much by just looking at someone and how they dress, or what color they are wearing.

^^^^^^ Man,I hate it when ppl do that. Thinking theyre Giths and such,it's really annoying..
Well,my grandmother, for one, dones'y want me to be Goth, because a long time ago, before I was born, some boys in West Memphis, wore all black and worshipped the devil or something like that, sacrifcied animals, and to get into some kind of ""gang"" they killed this boy.....So my grnadmother doesnt want me to wear all black because what that (Oh WOW),because they dont want ppl to think Im this or that..and I TOLD her/my parents and blah that I dont CAR what ppl think of me--b but they wont 'respect' anything ,ARGHH!!!!!!

There are many, many, swirling misconceptions of the Gothic culture. A Gothic person does not have to look like one thing or another.
I personally do not consider myself Gothic, sure, I love the Gothic art, photography and such, it's an amazing display of raw emotion, if you find the right examples, anyway.
Yes, wear black, not all black, all the time, and yes I dye my hair purple, and/or blue-black, but by no means neccissary does that make me a Goth. Goth culture is not singularly a fashion, it may play a role in expression, but simply a physical aire is not a defining trait.

So many people ask me if I'm goth and why I dress the way I do, but some do it SO rudely! My track coach even asked me!
I dont consider myself anything, I don't label myself. Anyways they think im goth!?!? Why? Becuase i wear black nail polish and wear somewhat gothy cloths? They need to see the real deal! They wont be making rude remarks to thier face then!
Today someone was like... "Why do you have sfaety pins on your cloths..... they could pop open and then hit some in the eye it's hazerious!"
........grrrrrr... I told her I thought it was highly doubful and she said she thought it wasn't, then I told her I didnt care what she thought.

I'm a happy goth. So...I guess I'm not a real goth. But I do have a leather choker with two inch long spikes on it!!! My parents hate and that's one of the reasons I love it.
