You've all heard the expression "one person can't change the world" right? Well I was watching the movie Gandhi in Social Studies today and realized just how untrue that statement really is! That man truly did change the world in his own way and anyone else can too! Maybe the reason one person can't change the world is that noone tries.....

I've been meaning to answer this for ages and I don't know what took me this long to get around to doing it You're right. One person *can* change the world. It's always been individuals who've changed the world. Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Yasser Arafat... even Bill Gates in his own way! Everybody in history has had a chance to change the world. Some did it for better and others brought us a step backwards. But they all changed the existing system. All of us are given a chance to change the world in our own small way. It's up to us to do that. If we give the best we have to offer, I'm pretty sure even we have a chance of changing the world.

I so totally agree! You may not be a famous volunteer like Mother Theresa or Ghandi, but if you can touch just one person's life, there is a positive change for the world. Can we brainstorm some ideas for ways that teens can make a difference? I'm thinking... ~Suggest a campaign at your school to raise money for third-world countries. Make it more personal by adopting a few children. Write letters to them. Usually if you go though those organizations, they'll send you pictures and allow you to correspond with the kids. ~Tutor or mentor younger children. ~Visit a hospital or nursing home. ~Volunteer at a food bank or soup kitchen. ~If there's an issue you're passionate about, do something about it! For example if you notice a lot of prejudice or racism in your school, get together with a group of friends, check with administration at your school, then do something about it! www.dosomething.org has awesome ideas for teens to make a difference.

people don't even have to be Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Yasser Arafat or Bill Gates, they can be anyone. i personally think that if you help someone live each and everyday to the fullest, you are changing the world. why? because you are showing someone that there is more to life than getting up at 6AM, going to work, coming home, eating, going to sleep, and doing it all over again. people have to take chances and make mistakes. they shouldn't be afraid to do things. someone in one of my classes last year said that "you should do something that scares you every day. or else you're just not living."

People like Ghandi can't change the world alone though. Even they can only hope to be a part of many, many people pushing things in the right direction.
One person can't change the world alone, but if each "one person" never tried then the thousands who are needed would never do it.

There are different ways to change the world. You could be the person that gives out smiles like other people give out advertising flyers, and thereby just brighten everyone's day that little bit. You could make a revolutionary discovery, cure disease and stop hunger. You could be part of a group with an idea and get things moving for the better. Or you could just change your own personal world everyday by doing that thing you've been scared of, talking to new people, learning new things. It doesn't matter how you change the world, the thing is, you have to try. "One person can't change the world" translates as "I'm too lazy to try". I should follow my own advice.
