This is a new birth control thread to replace the old one that was deleted when the sexuality board was taken down. I already contacted Miss Morning View and she gave me the go ahead. After all, it is a part of health and an important issue for women everywhere. We just have to make sure it doesn't get explicit. So, is birth control in any of your lives? What do you use? Do you like it? Why or why not? Side effects? Questions? Objections? Stories? Things of that nature. Edited to make this the official thread

I'm on Alesse 28, and have been taking them since last spring sometime. I take them mainly for getting rid of cramps, but I'm also prepared in case *something* happens. No major side effects so far - I was a bit nauseous the first month, but that was it. I also noticed that it made me very hungry, but that could be attributed to other factors. All in all, great pill.

For about a year, I was on Depo-Provera. And for about 8 months, it sucked. I would get month long periods with maybe a two week break in between. Eventually, Depo is supposed to gradually rid you of your period completely until you stopped taking it. After abouty eight months, it did. But the first part was awful.
But yeah. Right after Depo adjusted to my body I had to go and change. Now, I'm on Yasmin which is a pill form. After having the luxury of only having to get a Depo shot once every three months, I'm finding it rather difficult to remember to take a pill everyday at the same time. The doctor told me I would most likely experience nausea and spotting the first month, but I haven't really had a problem with either. One supposed effect of Yasmin is, unlike most other birth control pills, they're supposed to give you a higher chance of weight loss than weight gain. But I don't know how true that is. I haven't been on it long enough. So far so good, though!

I don't think any side effects will occur only if u smoke. I've been on the pill for a while, and nothing really has happend except for that i haven't gotten pregnant. I wanna try the patch. I was thinking about the shot, but i've heard of all these side effects and now, i'm not too sure.

^^Some people get side effects, others don't. You don't *have* to be a smoker in order to have side effects, although it does increase your risk for blood clots and other potentially fatal effects. Anyway, it's much better to stop smoking when you take the Pill, and even if you aren't on birth control, smoking is still really bad for you.

All these side effects! Sheesh. Whenever my mom hears about birth control she almost always says that it's not good for the body and that it's probably one of the reasons why women end up with all sorts of cancer.
What do you guys think?

I often wonder with all the chemicals we put into our bodies, what this does to us? I mean a drug that shuts off hormones and bodily processes can't be all that healthy in the long run. I don't have a solution, but we need to think about this stuff and you can't trust the media with their "EVERYTHING IS BAD AND WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!"-take, on what we do.

True, but you would also expect that normal, healthy body processes wouldn't have so many awful side affects, wouldn't you?

Just for the record, birth control pills do not "shut off" hormones. Rather, they put extra hormones into the body, which alters the body's chemistry, fooling your body into thinking its pregnant, therefore making you incapable of conceiving, since you can't get pregnant if you're already pregnant (make sense?). Yah it's kinda unnatural, but I'd rather that than a bunch of unwanted pregnancies, many of which turn into unwanted babies who are abused and/or neglected. I'm not saying that's true of all cases, but the birth control pill *does* prevent a lot of them. Furthermore, I would rather not go back to the days where women were forced into having more children than they could handle, and therefore forced into staying home with them, never having opportunities to work or just live life. Frankly, I think the pill is great, and I would never want to get rid of it.

I've been on Depo-Provera since March. Unfortunately my body hasn't adjusted quite yet. But I do like the fact that it's just a shot every three months, there is no way I would remember a pill everyday. And when I have sex tho I still use condoms because even tho Depo is supposed to be like 99.9% effective on preventing pregnancy I've heard that due to factors like body weight and such it's actually quite lower.
