I was wondering your opinion on this. It's a *huge* misconception that if you lift weights, it's only to build bulk and therefore we (girls) shouldn't be into that thing.
WRONG.
The thing is that if you get the right technique you can get toned instead of bulk.
I love lifting weights and I think the best thing to do is get past that image that weights give you bulk and that it's only for guys. It's not. It is possible (believe it or not) to lift weights and not end up looking like Chyna *breathes sigh of relief*. It's equally beneficiary for women as for men. I mean, if you don't like running or sports, why not just go lift for 15 minutes or so?
What are your takes on this? Do you lift weights? Is it harder to get into because it's predominately male?
Post away!

I agree with this. It depends on the weights. You can do free weights and use them to tone and add defintion. A set of five pound barbells are good for toning, take a set with you when you walk. Use them while watching TV. It's lifting the heavier barbells that make you bulk up.

^Thats true. I lift weights (usually 5 pound barbells) and I'm not bulky at all. I think some of my features are more defined now that I lift weights and it also makes me feel better about myself.

Using weights increases your lean muscle mass and speeds up your metabolism, which means that if you use weights in your work out routine, your metabolism will be fired up and you'll burn more calories per hour..even when you're sitting around. Muscle uses more energy than fatty tissue. Weight lifting rocks. And it's actually very difficult to bulk up

Some good points here, thanks ppl!
I don't lift weights but I'd like to start. My school has a weight room, which is good so I could go there after school instead of joining a gym or buying weights for home. But my arms are SO weak that I don't want to go in there as a total beginner and look really bad compared to everyone else. So I'm trying to do push ups and stuff at home as a start, slowly increasing the amount every day.

I'd never tried weight lifting until this summer - I went to a field hockey conditioning week, and @ the end, they gave us a book of workouts to do over the summer. So in addition to running and working on my field hockey skills, I've been lifting weights all summer. I have to say, I wasn't expecting to like it @ all, but I ended up loving it. It makes me feel *tough* (hehehe) and I can definitely see more tone, and I'm not getting bulky @ all.

I run cross country so every Mon, Wed, & Fri we lift weights in the field house. I don't lift that much but it really does help to tone you up....I mean, I don't like my legs (even tho everyone says they aren't bad at all...) so I do leg curls and my calves are really nice now ;D My thighs aren't much different though...
