Do you consider it a sport or not? I think it is when you're at a certain level. I know after jumping a course I'm out of breath and I'm a long distance runner so I have a lot of endurance. Also, Riding bare back gives your legs quite the work out. Nikki

It surely is a sport!!! Well, I ride English stile, and will have a competion on April 1st. I am so nervous!!! It is a jumping competition, you have to wear a uniform and stuff... I've never done it before... I mean, I had 3 competitions but they were easy and informal....
Riding bareback is bad for the horse. But if you ride without ... I dunno the english word... in italian it is 'staffe'... the place where you put the feet... well, that is a complete leg workout!!!!

The word is a stirrup.
And, riding bareback is NOT bad for the horses back. It's good for the riders leg as well as the rider-horse relationship.
Yes, I ride english and have been showing like that for many years. So, good luck. Do you jump? I jump and do dressage very occasionally.

The vet where I ride said riding bareback gives spinal cord injuries to the horse, or something like that. I know it is good for the rider horse relationship, but I don't think it is worth hurting your horse. Thanks for stirrups... I didn't remember Well, what do you think about competitions? Do you like them? Yes, I jump, but no dressage yet... where do you live? I didn't know in the Us they had english style riding...

Actually, I have never ridden a horse before. But some of my friends do and I certainly think that it would be considered a sport! It takes a lot of work and patience just like any other sport does. This summer I'm hoping to try to ride one. I think it would be a lot of fun.

soleluna.... u said u didn't know they had english style riding in the US??? LOL! It's like one of the biggest countries for english riding! They have produced so many famous english riders.... eventers, dressage riders, jumpers, hunters, and bigeqs alike! Where do you live? Cause no offense or anything but that is hilarious!

I rode for a long time, and I certainly consider it a sport. It takes hard work, patience, endurance, practice, persistance, and *major* leg muscles!!! ;D I had to give it up a couple months ago because I no longer had time to do it, but I'm hoping to start up again sometime next year when my schedule isn't so packed!

Yes I think Horseback riding is a sport espcially during shows. I have two horses but i don't show them because they are reallyreally really green!! so when i ride it's definatly not a sport it's more like a lesson for the horse in trust. I don't make any sense sometimes

I ride and love it. And it is a sport. like they said above, it takes practice and hard work. I have been riding for 3 years now, and I'm helping train my 6 y/o ex racehorse to jump. After trying to hold him back enough and get him going foreward enough and stuff, he gets me huffing and puffing. And when you are showing in the rain and blazing hot sun in a black wool coat and tall black boots, I would call that something...lol
