So, has anybody ever made candles before? I never did until last night. I didn't realize how much wax it would take up!
Does anyone have any cool ideas about how to make candles ? What I did was make them in various containers and wine glasses (not the real ones, the kind you can get from the dollar store). They actually came out okay.

Once I went to this craft show where you could make candles. They had like wax shavings in all different colors and then you layered them in a jar. Mine had glow in the dark wax it's really cool. ;D

When I was in like 5th grade we made candles but they were just the stick candles, the one's where you take a long wic and dip it and dip it until it turns into a candle. That took forever!

I've only tried making candles once. I melted the wax from a bunch of old, unscented candles in a double boiler, and I added a crayon for colour. I didn't realize how bad the crayon would make it smell (it was gross). I don't recommend using crayons - it's way worse than the normal smell of a crayon. Burnt crayons are not good.

I'm actually kind of afraid of using larger candles in case they topple over and start a fire. Instead, I use a small, ceramic candle holder, with a little entrance at the bottom to put in a flat, round candle, with a aluminium seal around it. Above it, you put on some scented jelly-like substance, which you can buy especially for burning, and once you light the candle underneath, you can hear it crackling. It's kind of fun to watch, or hear. As a naive child, I once made a pathetic attempt to create candles. I followed the directions in a magazine, substituing a few things here and there. I found some old oil pastles, and tossed them into a pot, and let them melt. I think I was supposed to mix it with water, I don't know, but it went terribly wrong. It began popping, and that was before I tried adding the wick. I found a piece of string, and dipped it into the multi-colored mixture, but it hardened too soon, and I was left with a pot filled with hard melted pastel, which had started turning a rather unappealing color. I cleaned the pot to the best I could, but my mom threw it away. I guess no one liked their food cooked in a pot of hard pastel.

I don't make candles anymore, but I collect them. Some ideas for decorations: stick beads into the wax while it's still warm; mix glitter with the wax; use funky things (I was gonna say wineglasses, but someone above me did...they're cool) like Altoids containers or film containers as molds; etc. If you can think of using it, you pretty much can add it in/stick it on/or mold it with. (Did that make sense? ) Love, ~The Kitten~

^wick I've made candles before. My family volunteers at a living history museum and sometimes we tought a bunch of school kids how to make hand dipped candles. Standing outside in the hot sun over boiling wax with a bunch of 10 year-olds trying to shove their way closer to the pot and almost knocking you over is not my idea of fun. Plus it took hours and I always got wax all over my dress. I never made candles again.

Try this: Melt some wax or other candles. Fill a container with ice, maybe crushed. Stick a wick in the ice and pour the melted wax or candles over the ice. The ice will melt, and there will be bubbles and holes in the candle.
Or:
Make one of those colored sand terrariums. Layer different colors of sand and put a wick in the middle, then pour the wax on top of the sand, it's too thick to run down so it will stay mostly on top of the sand and you'll have a cool candle decoration in a glass bowl or goblet.
