I am a Christian and I personally dont see anything wrong with piercings or tattoos. I know the Bible says "Do not put tattoo marks on yourselves" but can that mean that you cannot tattoo yourself but can go to the tattoo parlour and it get it done properly? Back in those days, the hygeine wasn't exactly top but millions of people these days have had tattoos done safely & no complications. I like to express myself and I'd like to do this via tattoo. Am I right or wrong?

Hey, I have my navel pierced, and my ears pierced, and I don't see anything wrong w/ it. But I don't like tattoos because i'm afraid I would get tired of it, and would want it off, and i hear getting a tattoo off is really painful, and i'm such a baby when it comes to any kind or form of pain. ~~jewels

This is a good question. Can I ask where in the Bible it says that about tattoos? I've wondered about this. I am thinking of getting a tattoo, and am interested in the answer to that. I thought that line in the Bible was in the Old Testament, is that true?

I have never heard the Bible say this before. Where in the Bible(chapter & verse)does it say this? Thanks!

<<"Do not put tattoo marks on yourselves">> I haven't heard this before. Like spastic.fruit said, could you maybe specify the chapter and verse? I'm a Catholic, or at least my parents and grandparents are, but if I want to tattoo (A little star or heart on my hip of upper arm, by the way. ), I'd sure as well get one. I'm not a full-practising Catholic, God knows I can't stand mass every Sunday, and I won't let my beliefs get in the way of what I want to do.

^^Um, just a question. If you're not going to let your beliefs stand in the way of what you want to do, then why do you care where it is in the Bible?

I think nowadays, they can laser tattoos off. It probably hurts, but it's not intolorable.
Congratulations to you, Gothic.girl.uk.
Here's the Bible verse in question:
Leviticus 19:28 "Never cut your bodies in mourning for the dead or mark your skin with tattoos, for I am the LORD."
Okay, let me explain this. When Moses was walking the desert for 40 years with three million people, God was working on shaping attitudes and thinking and it had to be quick. Leviticus deals with shaping our ways. Do we value God, or things?
I'm sure this is either very simplistic or incorrect, but it seems to me that God didn't want His people to mark themselves up just because He was a meanie. He did it because people who did this may have been perceived to be prostitutes, drunks, and other wholesome people.
It depends on the kinds and amounts of tattoos you want. It's not necessarily "wrong," to get tattoos. God often tells us not to do things because of how they will affect us later in life. You wouldn't want a huge tattoo on your face if your ambition is to work in the corporate world. It's unfortunate, but that's how they like it.
A few tattoos won't be a problem, but what will they look like when you're 60? Most of the cautions against vanity, tattoos, and too much makeup and jewelry, is a warning not so much against attracting attention to yourself, but how you are percieved and even judged by what you wear. Sound familair? Don't go crazy with the tattoos, but I doubt God would have a problem with a few. You should see the people at my church, they have blue and green hair.
Here's more I found.
1 Peter 3:3-4
3. Don't be concerned about the outward beauty that depends on fancy hairstyles, expensive jewelry, or beautiful clothes.
4 You should be known for the beauty that comes from within, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is so precious to God.

I think the most important thing in the Christian faith is to focus on God. So let everything you do be for God and for his glory. So now, question whether having a tattoo is going to; - sway you from God, take your attention from him - take away any glory that is his and deserves to be his I don't think God is going to have a real issues with you having a tattoo, as long as it isn't huge and mucks up the gorgeous body he's given you. If it helps you to express yourself, then great. But if it's huge and is a mark of identity for you (which can be found totally in God) then then are deeper problems.

<<If you're not going to let your beliefs stand in the way of what you want to do, then why do you care where it is in the Bible?>>
Because I said I'm not going to let my beliefs get in the way of what I want to do, it doesn't mean I don't care about what it says on the Bible.
I know of more than a handful of religious people who have piercing and tattoos. A lot of girls these days have pierced ears, belly buttons, etc., and a fraction of them are likely to be Christian. So does that mean they don't care about their beliefs because they're doing what they want to do?

I never said that^^^^. I said in my first post, that I was even considering getting a tattoo. I never said anything about other people, just asking a question about your post.
I don't think those Christians who get tattoos don't care about what God says, (like I said, I was thinking of it). I just think that they, like me, don't think it's a sin or anything, and don't think God is necessarily against it, like Toxic and Miss said. What you said was that you wouldn't let your beliefs stand in the way of doing what you wanted. That has nothing to do with Christians who've done some studying and decide it's okay with God and then go ahead and do it. Completely different.

but I do see Annies original point^^^...I mean surely what you believe is true and right should be aligned with how you act. Its like saying you don't believe in wearing hats whilst maxing out your card in hat shop. I mean, its about how far from God your actions take you, not the action itself.
Besides is you believe that God is good and that he knows and loves you, surely HE wants what is best for you, and there's not much conflict between His will and yours. There is a differnece between reading the bible in context (studying it and then maing a decision) and doing what you want. In some cases the bible is very cut and clear. God doesn;t leave us the option of interpreting it different ways.
Its just good that tattoos aren't one of those areas.

A close Christian friend told me that God considers everything you do that takes time away from him, or energy or whatever, is a sin. Or something like that. (I just woke up and I'm working on my coffee ). I don't know if that is true or not, because then, wouldn't that mean everything you did (like track) that WASN'T worshipping or praying, be a sin? It just doesn't make sense. My point is, unless it's a cross, God's holy name, or a verse from the Bible, He might pretty much take offense. Does anyone understand what I am trying to say? (**Note to self: Never post within an hour of waking up.**)

<<God considers everything you do that takes time away from him, or energy or whatever, is a sin. >>
I wouldn't go that far. There are things that we do but they are not necessarily sins. You have to work, you have to sleep and other things. You can think about God and that's what He wants us to do, but He's not going to hold it against us when we lapse once in a while.
You can do things to the glory of God, or not. But running track, shopping, or hanging with friends is not a sin.

^^That makes more sense than what my friend told me. She also got very mad at me and wouldn't speak to me when I told her everything in the Bible might no be true, as in, some parts have changed a litte since it was written. Her grandmother forbade her to speak to me. *sighs* I didn't say I believed it, just that it was a possibility.
Anyway...this post had no point. Very sorry.
