Since we get a lot of posts like these usually, I'd like to start an Official thread for them. Discuss infections, discharge and whatever else associated with that beautiful body part. And please, use the words for it - don't say "down there". It's time we got over our bodily shame.

Also, don't refer to your vagina as the "P" or "C" word. They're quite degrading.
My question is... What's the deal with yeast infections? Are they common? What causes them?

Wearing thongs all the time can cause yeast infections.

^ Yeah, I read somewhere that you have a higher risk of getting yeast infections when you have diabetes... that sucks... (i have it) I haven't had one yet anyway. ~*Esther*~

I got some more info:
75% of women will get a least one yeast infection in their lifetimes. They are also caused by wearing tight jeans, noncotton underwear, or from wearing a wet bathing suit all day.

When i got the "womanly talk" from my mom, she said that once a woman begins to have sex, then if there is any sperm from a man on the outside of her vagina, then that could also cause it. but i don't know.
i have a question. i heard all over the place that once a girl starts her period, then she will begin to have an oder (i don't know like) near or in her vagina. does the oder get stronger when she's about to have her period, or does it just smell 24/7?
and do guys have a smell near their penis?

[glow=pink,2,300]I've read in a few places that you can get pregnant from sperm on the outside of the vagina.
How can wearing a thong cause a yeast infection? Is it true drinking cranberry juice can reduce the risk of getting a yeast infection? A friend of mine told me that yesterday.[/glow]

Yeast (Candida albicans) is a fungus that naturally exists in your vagina. Wearing a thong or those ^other things make it grow out of control. And so you get a yeast infection. Other way to get a yeast infection (I wish there weren't so many ) antibotics (they kill off good bacteria) birth control pills douching (can alter the pH in your vagina) cold or flu

^As far as I know, I don't, so sorry, I don't think I can be of much help.
I was wondering what the consensus is on hair removal in the vaginal area. I mean, we all know it's common to shave your legs, because that we can see. But what about the vagina? It's not like we discuss it often or compare them. Many people shave their bikini line (the part around it) but what about your actual vagina?

[glow=pink,2,300]I know a couple of girls who can't stand hair down there and shave it all off. I read something in a magazine a while back but I don't really remember what it says...just be careful. Personally I think shaving it all off would just be weird.[/glow]

I agree that it would be a little odd. But I'd be careful, because I've read some things about this. Your hair is down there for a reason - to protect your vagina from harmful bacterias that cause infections, etc. Shaving all of that hair off could lead to greater chances of infections.

It's normal. No two vaginas are alike, and no one is Playboy-bunny perfect! I really wouldn't worry about it. I believe you're talking about your vaginal lips, which are supposed to be there.
<<I know a couple of girls who can't stand hair down there and shave it all off.>>
I don't think there's a great risk of infections, but I don't know for sure. I do know that a lot of girls do it, and I haven't heard any serious warnings against it. The most common (and painful) side effects are shaving bumps and ingrown hairs (yeeeouch!). Of course, stubble isn't too pleasant. I don't take it all off, but I just feel cleaner when it's not as, well, covered. It's really just a personal preference--whatever feels good to you.

^^^Exactly. It's your personal preference. And while I don't like to take it all off...I do like to, oh how would you say this, trim it a bit.
